Re: Out of Curiousity...
I have a couple family friends who have done extensive contract work for various agencies, and they would tend to agree with MDFubar. There is a tremendous amount of stuff going on that is hidden from public view regarding technology and space development. Not Area 51, lasers in space, or alien conspiracy stuff, but significant investments in satellite, communications, and propulsion technology that few people really have any contact with.
That being said, Bad Astronomy has the whole moon landing faked theory pretty locked up, among other things.

Re: Out of Curiousity...
The spacecraft shielding was a calculated gamble. The amount of shielding for an earth orbit or moon shot is limited by weight. The LEM was about a beer can thickness. The Apollo astronauts reported seeing flashes in their eyeballs, thought to be cosmic radiation. A major radiation event such as a solar flare and they would be soo screwed.

Re: Out of Curiousity...
That's probably the biggest challenge to a manned Mars mission.
I was a big L5 fan in the late 70's and early 80's. The L5 movement was a movement to establish permanent city-size stations in orbit to process lunar and asteroid ore into orbital solar power stations, which would beam the power to fields of microwave receivers on the ground, typically over cropland. Shielding from cosmic rays requires very thick and heavy layers of material. If you don't have enough, it actually makes the problem worse, because the fast cosmic ray particles hit the shielding and generate bursts of even more deadly secondary particles. They're slower and more massive, so they have more chance to interact with stationary particles (ie. human tissue). |
