Re: Extinction events
I was more struck by the sheer size of the universe implied by GRBs. The article said latest estimates gave a GRB rate of about 1 per galaxy per 100,000 years, of which only a tiny fraction would be aimed close enough to earth for us to detect them -- and yet we see 2 or 3 GRBs per week! Thats a lot of galaxies!

Re: Extinction events
Yes, the moon is an artificial structure. Its purpose remains unknown, but most likely it was created to set an even tidal system and give a more regular exposure to the surface of the earth of light from the sun.
Ever wonder why earth is the only planet with a "24 hour" daylight cycle? |

Re: Extinction events
Put it in simple terms, a GRB is emited at the rotating pole of a black hole. If something other then gravity and x-ray can escape a black hole, it must be something of awesome force.
But to put it in a comparative aspect: a 100watt bulb is the sun. Now take 10§10 100,000,000 candle power spotlights for 10 seconds. is there a way to superscript in ubb?

Re: Extinction events
So.. If my part of the country is hit by and asteroid or other large indescriminate space object that oblitherates (I like my son's version of the word) the region.. Does that wipe out the debt I incurred buying a huge earth depleating SUV?

Can't really say what they'll be used for (you can guess--think about ways to thwart satellite tests PRC ran this year...), but I can just say they're going up and wont be anywhere operational until 2015.

Re: Extinction events
Add to that that the earth's sidereal day is getting longer. The days went by much more quickly in the Jurassic.
Also, the earth's tidal "system" is not "even" by any stretch of the imagination. Well, maybe yours.

Re: Extinction events
Dont forget that large nuclear explosions, mass redistribution on a planetary scale (due to global warming), and meteor impacts all cause shifts in the earth's axis as well as the length of day.
Huge earthquakes and mega volcanoes (ala Yellowstone) can do the same thing. (assuming you survive a Yellowstone eruption) Indeed, the 24-hr day is not cut and dry... nor is the calendar.

You misinterpreted what I meant. Also, someone commented about mars having a similar rotation, well, you're wrong. Earth's rotation is completely due to the moon being the exact mass/density it is, if it didn't exist we'd only have about 6 hours of sunlight each rotation (depending on the position along the axis of sol's gravitic field). |

Re: Extinction events
The TG forum code appears to have eaten my original link from Yahoo News. Let's try it again:
http ://news.yahoo.com/s/space/20071219/sc_space/smallasteroidsposebignewthreat Crap, it keeps turning my url tags into media tags, and I think that's what broke the original link. How do I stop the helpful rewriting? Meanwhile, I'll just throw a space in to try to stop it. |
