Re: U.S. and Iran - Near Clash at Sea.

Iran releases their video of the event. Less Tonkin more Cole.

Verrrry interesting. I dunno why the US radio operator didnt just cooperate though, all the Iranian wanted was his side-numbers and course and speed. Given the location they were in (Hormuz) I dont see why this was such a big deal. (sigh)

Re: U.S. and Iran - Near Clash at Sea.

Ya know.. I don't know what further commentary there was on that video, but it seems like that radio comm portion was awhile after the warships past them. The IRG guy already knew the ship ID when the comm portion of the video started. ??

Edit: apparently there is more then is being let on. Both sides so far are only releasing small portions of the overall incident. The IRG guy isn't requesting the ships number, he's requesting the side number of the SH-60 that is in the air, you can see it briefly in Squids link, but also in the longer IRG version of the video. Leads me to believe there should also be video from the SH-60.

It's possible that the Seahawk violated their airspace and the Iranian swarmboats are just trying to get justification. If that's indeed the case, good luck getting our Navy to admit it.

This whole thing is garbage to me. Not worth the statements our leaders made at all. Just makes us look stupid. Regardless of who's at fault.

What was most interesting to me about the Iranian vids is that it verifies they use that model of boat in their military. So that puts the "weekend warrior" theory to rest. To the Iranian's defense, since everyone these days has an itchy trigger finger... I dont blame them for their erratic piloting - as that would make it tougher for the Aegis' 50 cal Vulcans to rip em to shreds.

I'm sure they're trained to stay on the move when they're confronting another warship. Just makes sense in a tense situation.

p.s.
The IRG guy on the radio (which was a handheld VHF) was on Ch. 11, when the standard hailing/distress channel is 16. It's POSSIBLE the other ships in the fleet were trying to raise the IRG on ch. 16, when in fact they were on ch. 11. (sigh) In the longer vid. the IRG started on 16 however... maybe the US radio op. from a different ship forgot to switch to 11. (normally you start your convo. on 16 and then switch to a working channel, such as 11 - it's standard radio etiquette... you dont have conversations on 16) Either way, it's very possible their comms were messed up.

It's not so much what happened in this case as it is what will happen the next time, I am sure our naval officers were reminded of their rules of engagement and the IRG was reminded about what they need to do.. now, where those two directives meet is where we see whats next.

IMO, if it does happen again, and given the attempts at thawing the tension with Iran - the IRGCN is clearly no serious threat to US Warships, I say, invite them aboard for lunch!

Wow the other video paints a different picture, although I guess that was the idea.

Re: U.S. and Iran - Near Clash at Sea.

Maybe this whole thing was a publicity stunt for both the U.S. and Iran. Maybe those folks up top got bored with the politics talk and staged this so both countries can get some PR points.
