Re: what do you do, what you make?

Appliance Tech.... 15k, I have no GED/ or College. I failed miserably at life, I just switched jobs. Working in the Cigar business for awhile, making min wage, but its fun. I've learned a lot though in the last two weeks, and hopefully I can take the store over when this guy decides to open another shop. Then maybe 30k a year.

Undead, I dont want to tell you what to do or insult you, but at 21, you cant possibly say you've "failed miserably at life". There are an infinite number of ways to get yourself going. It's never too late to get a GED (and it only takes 3 hours of your time), then it's college and up. I know lots of people who didnt decide to go to college until they were 30+, even one guy who I met at univeristy of colorado who was 94 as a freshman! It's all a matter of motivation, but really, at 21, theres nothing but possibilities and nothing at your age is irrecoverable.

QC Engineer / Scientific Associate - > $50k
I do software quality control stuff on bioinformatics software .. so lots of scripting involving verification of biological data, protein conformation analysis, receptor-ligand energy calculations, DNA/RNA sequence analysis, etc

I'm hoping to save up enough for grad school and not be in debt.

**applause for tau**

Find yourself a university lab that will take you for a single rotation in a genetics lab. Once they see you've got what it takes the PI will likely get you on board as a phd candidate. In which case, tuition should be paid for.

I'm not sure I have the patience for a PhD so I'm thinking MS in Bioinformatics / Computational Bio. I don't know of many universities that will offer stipends for non-PhD/MD grad students

Re: what do you do, what you make?

Me software developer for 3 years at current job 100k
Wife sales rep for about 1.5 years ~35k

Benefits in both jobs are ehh.

How many people like their jobs regardless of pay?

I give mine a 9 out of 10. (It isn't a ten only because of the hour commute.) It is a small company at about 25-30 employees and we write city and school management software. I make all technical decisions without question so they basically trust me with the company. I really, really like that. It is so satisfying to be trusted and appreciated.

I got offered almost double what I am making now but turned it down. I have a friend that works at the other place and I know I would be miserable. It is like my last job where I put on 50 pounds and had constant stress related problems. There are more important things than money (after a point).

Re: what do you do, what you make?

Im 15, sophomore in highschool, and don't have a regular job yet. I work at my school's performing arts center (a.k.a. the auditorium.... fancy name for w\e reason...) at $8 an hour (they have looked into raising to $10/hr, but might not happen). Its a great job, pretty much I help people that rent our auditorium set up mics, amps, music, lighting etc. Pretty easy job, better than minimum wage, and because of the random nature of working hours, its very flexible. I got ~$700 last year i think.

Re: what do you do, what you make?

I'm a Project Manager/QA Lead/Tech Support Lead (yes, thank you corporate reorganizations, I get more titles but no more $!) making right at $60K. However, my benefits package is stellar for this day and age, which might be something to factor in besides just salary level.

Health insurance is a $250 deductible per person up to $750 family and then 100% coverage on everything and my portion of the premium isn't bad at all. I mention that because that probably takes my overall compensation package up closer to $75K in value. Something to keep in mind for those of you a little earlier in your working years. Base salary isn't everything, benefits are a major factor.

Re: what do you do, what you make?

Hmm about 3 years (minus 3-5 months within that time of being layed off) of Finish Plumbing. Now into my 2nd month of Rough Plumbing. Non union. My last W-2 was about 19k. High school dropout.

Really tedious, repetitive, and boring work, when I'm not busting my hump. Dirty too boot.

Hehe, Im pretty much just like you Undead.

I also love learning new things, from all kinds of jobs.
