Re: what do you do, what you make?

Lead programmer at a startup company, web development job (ASP.NET). I get paid $10/hr and get 50% in profit sharing. Before you wonder how the hell anyone hired a programmer for $10/hr, keep in mind that this is just a summer job that sort of extended itself to happen during the school year--I don't have a degree in Computer Science (nor do I intend to get one).

I say "lead programmer" not because I'm the only programmer, but because that's what my boss changed my title to when he hired two more people to work under me part time. It makes a guy feel important to be in charge of grown men during his sophomore year at university.

I see none of the money, however, since the leftovers from tuition costs go to keeping my family afloat.

Amen to that man. Teachers dont get paid nearly enough and their benefits are crap too. I remember when I was in high school, the city of tampa tried to pass a half-cent tax for the schools, which was supposed to get better books, facilities, increase teacher salaries, etc. Basically improve the overall quality of education for Hillsborough County. It got shot down because all of the retirees in the area voted against it. The local news conducted some interviews and I remember one elderly lady saying "Of course I voted against it. I dont have any kids in school, so why should I have to pay taxes to make the schools better if it doesnt concern me?" Hmmm...perhaps cause those kids that are in school are going to be your doctors and nurses and people that take care of you when you cant do it yourself anymore.
/end rant.

But yes, teachers deserve a huge boost.

Actually... I agree with you... part of the reason i started this post to was see and actually compare... I've always thought I got paid well for what I do... now on the same token, when a cop loses his life in the line of duty... I'm will to bet the family of said cop will say it was never worth 75k...

do realize that not all cops are paid the same, smaller community cops get paid in the 30k, average like mine in the 60's, and some nice communities pay there cops near 100... it's not uniformed...

Starting out as a cop is hard, usually 25 to 30k a year, but the longer you stay in the better it gets... after 25 years I would be at around 100k a year.

but again, teachers and education IMO should get paid alot more and better.

Re: what do you do, what you make?

agreed 100%

but as a single man in the army, a private...with everything supplied to me... that 700 bucks spending money was pretty nice... then I got married and had kids...all free... so IMO, in peace time the military gets paid and taken care of pretty well...

now in war time they should be paid alot more, and taken care of in every way, even in death...even there families.

I think it is horrible that some enlisted have to go on welfare to support their families.

With that said I really don't think the lower ranks should be paid all that much. Single 18yr olds with too much cash on hand is a dangerous thing.

And I was kinda pleasantly surprised as well at the level of pay of law enforcement. Probably the stupid media's fault. All you ever hear is the "entry" pay. Well, 25-30k for first year isn't all that bad, really. What average job (ie those that don't require a Harvard or Yale degree) starts off well above 30k?

Well, that's actually kinda low for a four year graduate, and all the police departments around here require a four year degree now.

I guess it depends on where you live. Most software developers in my area start out at around 30k with a four year degree and no experiance. I started at 32k with a four year degree and six years military experience in a technical field. Maybe that is why most with degrees go to work outside the state?

But then again in Oklahoma the median house price is about 109k and generally the cost of living is not that high. A guy I knew in college got an offer hear in Oklahoma for about 30k. He got another offer someplace in California for about 52k. I recently found out he moved back because, although his salary was well into the six figures, he couldn't really afford to live there the way he wanted to. His salary was cut to about half but he was able to buy a nice house on a dozen acres.

So depending on your type of degree, where you get your degree and the area you live in and the demand at the time, I guess you could start out a lot higher than 30k.

But really, why would anybody pay a un-tested employee more than they absolutely had to? They may end up being a horrible employee. After being part of the hiring process for a while I see starting salaries completely different. -Edit- You want it to be just enough to keep them alive. You don't want them working for you just for the paycheck.
