Re: what do you do, what you make?
I design, build, and implement Business Intelligence and Performance Management systems for businesses from $300m gross revenue and up, so....IT Consultant. On the rare occasions that Rincewind is in Houston and I am not on the road, we have a drink and get a tattoo. We have to keep arguing about who picks up the tab, so I'd rather just say that my income is in the range I see posted at the usual sites.

Re: what do you do, what you make?
In a former life, I was an IT Technician, which really didn't aptly describe my job. Anyways, I'm now a much better paid Environmental Consultant and trying to finish out my college degree (Network Administration). My W-2 clock in at right under 43K this year. Not too shabby for a job that has loads less stress than my old one.

Re: what do you do, what you make?
I'm a Trauma Nurse. Base pay on my contract puts me at 92k a year (2 years in). However, I also have chronic insomnia so I pick up high amounts of extra shifts, which put me at 106k on my W-2. On top of all this, I'm a doctoral student paying outrageous tuition costs, which takes my available income down to 41k. Yahoo.

Re: what do you do, what you make?
If I had half a brain 10 years ago (which I didn’t) I should of gone on the nursing route. They pretty much get whatever they want here in California.

Re: what do you do, what you make?
Nursing is one of those things thats largely overlooked. People dont seem to undertsnad what a huge defecit there is and as a result, you really can make as much money as you want (for you numbers folks: my hospital has a staff capacity for nurses of 410. We currently have less than 250 on staff, resulting in all of us being hugely overworked and having as many as 12+ patients at a time when we're supposed to have no more than 5). The biggest thing going on right now is a practice called "hospital hopping", in which nurses will bounce around between two or three hospitals who are constantly one-upping the other guys for the nurses. Basically, its like this:
Nurse gets job with Hospital A for 74k/yr. 4 months later, Hospital B offers 80k. Nurse takes new job. a few months later Hospital C offers 85k. Same deal. From this point, its a matter of better offers and benefits from the three competing hospitals, which can be in the form of money, benefits, hours, select shifts, ward preference, etc. With about 4-5 years experience in a field, a nurse can pretty much write their own ticket job-wise. Oh and sarc, you're absolutely right about california. One of my mom's former classmates when she was in school for her doctorate in psychology is a former nurse from SF. She and 3 other nurses rented a condo on Nob Hill (super-pricey) and they would fly from various parts of the country, live there for 6 months while working at one of the hospitals in the bay area and then take a 6 month vacation. All making 6 figure salaries, all with less than 10 years experience.

Re: what do you do, what you make?
So far...I make the least amount of money here. AWESOME! Since I made E-5, I should be raking in a whopping 3 grand more a year. Got to love it

Re: what do you do, what you make?
I'm a security specialist working as a DoD contractor right now. Income is just under 6 figures. I am likely transitioning into a GS-12 position for the same agency so I'll be making less if that transition takes place.

Re: what do you do, what you make?
That's why I'm going to make the switch. The benefits outweigh the salary reduction. I make more now, but benefits are really quite bad.
