Candidate McCain must explain why, during a May 1993 meeting with Vietnamese officials in Hanoi, he and former POW Pete Peterson (now U.S. ambassador to Vietnam) asked the Vietnamese to keep "Vietnamese files in their possession pertaining to American POWs who were released in 1973 available ONLY to Defense Intelligence Agency researchers.")
This is part of a smear by a group called Vietnam Veterans Against McCain. it's not really a group it's just one guy.

How does one get to be part of the party machine? I was watching some Sunday morning election analysis and the panel seemed to think that McCain didn't have a chance because he was very much "out" in the Republican machine. The national party committee doesn't want him. So it seems like the real king makers are the national party apparatus, and the way to influence the election is not to vote or raise money but to somehow get on that committee. (I think this is the "federalism" that Gambit alludes to.)
precisely

The one saving grace is that both parties seem to have a fundamental crack in their structures. As you will see today, the lead figures for the Kennedys will be supporting Obama. This marks a huge shift in the party. Unfortunately, the party isnt Kennedy-esque anymore... it's Clinton-esque, therefore the Clintons are the default winners.

I would, but it would take a while to get the message across to all of the colleges and universities.

Wait... I'm confused. You posted a URL which contained information about John Mccain and made several remarks against mccain and on the next page you acknowledge the link as a smear campaign put on by a single person? 'Smear campaign' in my book has a rather negative, non-fact-based connotation.

Re: WTH just happened in the SC Election?

Recall awhile back that the Dems had a gentleman's agreement to not run in a couple of states (Florida was one) due to those states moving their primary back. Clinton won those states and is now lobbying to get their votes counted at the convention. (Saw this on the mentioned TV show, so no link.)

She's not a gentleman, so she has a loophole.

Oh, but it isn't just one single person.

Re: WTH just happened in the SC Election?

It's not hard to deduce that this whole McCain 'Nam hero crap is a farse. IMO, if you like McCain, you shouldnt like him because he's a "nam vet." Most people have no idea what his capacity was, nor do they know what happened while he was a POW. When you do dig around, of course you're not going to find anything "honorable." The whole war was dishonorable to begin with.

The issue I have is that McCain basically forms his whole life around the fact he was a Nam POW. That to me means he deserves scrutiny on his exact capacity as such. Of course, he doesnt want people to know.

If they can swiftboat Kerry (which turned out to be a falsification btw) when Karey doesnt embrace the Nam war or use it to his advantage, then they sure as heck can swiftboat McCain... who uses Nam as his "Black Amex" card wherever he goes.

p.s.
You can dig up shytsmelling dirt on all of these candidates. Most of them did dishonorable things to get where they are. Who stinks the least is usually the one we should vote for. So far, Obama stinks the least - but I'm sure he's still smelly.

Re: WTH just happened in the SC Election?

--It was "Kerry", not "Karey".

--None of the swiftboat allegations were ever actually refuted, just disparaged. Unless you have a resource I don't know about?

--Kerry made his 'nam Vet status a centerpiece of his campaign, just like McCain does, so it was perfectly reasonable to call him on it. Likewise, its perfectly reasonable to call McCain on it too.

--However, I dislike McCain for so many other reasons already that I really don't care whether the 'nam accusations are true or not, because I wasn't going to vote for him anyway. So I haven't even bothered to figure out what exactly Mentholated's source is complaining about.

Re: WTH just happened in the SC Election?

Kerry's swiftboat junk isnt even worth mentioning really, even if the accusations are true. Kerry fought against the war, that THAT's what he used as part of his campaign. His capacity at driving a plywood piece of flotsam around the wetlands of vietnam really makes no difference to me.

Now, McCain's story is something else. He's an admiral's son, who was also an admiral's son... born and bred in Naval society (the pick of the warmonger litter so to speak). He was a Naval Aviator driving multi-million dollar machines and reigning destruction on his targets. It doesnt surprise me he'd get special treatment before, during, and after the Nam war. He's an important military daddy's boy. And most likely the VC kept him alive because of such, and most likely he was somewhat of a collaborator, as many POWs are.

So, if ever someone needed to be "swiftboated" it'd probably be McCain... because he owes his entire existence to Vietnam.... and what more then likely is a lie.

I wish people would stop forcing Ron Paul on the internet. I can't seem to go anywhere without seeing his name in this forum now

I'm all for discussing it...but Ron Paul is a buzz word only on the internet.
