I believe that CNN's decision to hire him was, as ScratchMonkey pointed out, 'following the money.' Fox News proved that ignorance can sell because you end up simultaneously catching two vastly different demographics - ignorant people who agree with him and observant people who are entertained (either through laughter or rage) by him. This is the secret to Bill O'Reilly's success (which may be short-lived), and Beck's CNN job is a response to that. The shock-jocks of cable news.

I'm curious to see if Fox tones down the rhetoric in an effort to reverse their failing trend. They used to laugh at people calling out their hipocracy, but now it really seems to be catching up with them. Murdoch isn't stupid - he'll change it if the revenue is drying up - won't he?

Fox will remain more or less what it is so long as Roger Ailes and his surrogates are running the show. They have a winning formula with a real ability to influence popular opinion, even if in some years they only stay on the fringe. As long as Newscorp has other media property to market, Fox news will continue to play to its audience. They are basically immune to anything less than catastrophic market forces.
