Re: Valentine's Day - Best day to met single women!

Sure, thats because most people rush into marriage. They get what they think is love and then get married without ever spending any real time with the person. Theres also safeguards against the woman taking half of what you own, such as prenuptial agreements. Also, several states have marriage laws that limit what can be taken in a divorce (such as hawaii, in which the marriage property is to be split evenly based on what the couple had when they got married).

You take a very dim view of marriage. I'd say the vast majority of the people I know who are married are very happy. Marriage brings about a great many things that are positive. You have someone by your side to act as confidant, someone who will take care of you and look out for your best interests, someone who will provide you warmth and comfort. Also, ask any of the married men here at TG, there is no greater joy in life than being a father.

Cynicism is no way to go through life. If you dont believe me, wait until you're 70-80 years old and looking back on the things you wish you had done, such as starting a family, and ask yourself then if your opinion on getting laid was worth it.

Incorrect sir!

I want to note that that divorce rate so frequently hocked around as an excuse is wildly misinterpreted.

It is how many marriage licenses are terminated. What it DOESN'T account for is REPEATED terminations by the SAME person. So this four times divorced man alone has skewed that data. There are countless millions of happy marriages, and maybe 100 thousand individuals keep skewing the data to that horrible misinterpretation.

Silly people, monogamy is underrated. Nothing compares to having someone who truly loves you and cares about you and wants to be with you for ages. See if you can't make room for additional shared polyamory though I'm sure you can catch my drift.

Its been very satisfying for me...I've been in two monogamous relationships for 5/6ths of the last 3 years. That 1/6th without I tried that "hook up" lifestyle...and it was depressing. Juggle women, even multiple women, all you want, it isn't fundamentally satisfying if they're just entertaining (and replaceable) toys.

Are you confusing "marriage" with "love"?

After living with roommates of one kind or another for 40 years, I'm blessedly single for the last few, except for my cat. I do look forward to coming home to her, but even she can be a pain to live with.

OTOH, I've speculated that I may be an Aspie, and my love for hermit-hood stems from that.

No, although they are closely connected in my mind. I'm not interested in marriage for the sake of marriage, I'm interested in the sort of love that finds its culmination in marriage.

I equate "marriage" with "religious ceremony to satisfy the ancestors", or as a tax-avoidance maneuver. I don't think of it as "culmination of love". At best, maybe a girl's ultimate Barbie fantasy day, with lots of dress-up and partying.

Re: Valentine's Day - Best day to met single women!

Thats kinda a dim view of marriage. For me its a ceremonial representation of commitment that two people are making to each other out of love and respect. Sure, theyre ridiculously expensive most times, but then again, I know a few people who are happily married and just had a courthouse wedding.

I've never been a fan of ceremony. (For one thing, I hate crowds.) I, too, know people who are very happy after taking the courthouse route.

Re: Valentine's Day - Best day to met single women!

I am old fashion on the subject.

First you find somebody you like and respect. Then you get married (however you wish but it must be formalized). THEN you fall in love.

Nah, you're not old fashioned. If you were old fashioned, your parents would find you someone to marry.

You don't need love for the contract to be useful, and you don't need the contract to prove your love.

Agreed, I can think of plenty of scenarios where the marriage contract can be useful even absent love.

But here I disagree. Granted, there are some scenarios where the marriage contract is just plan unavailable for whatever reason, and then you just do what you can. But for the majority of us who can acquire a marriage license any time we want, if someone professes love for you but refuses to take that final step and be married, I think you've got to question the sincerity of their love. I know I would.

I've never understood that... What does a piece of paper have to do with love? Rings? They're symbols. I understand that. The wedding? Symbolic as well. I didn't need one, but the wife wanted one, so we had one. But if your love is dependent on a contract, then what kind of love do you really have?
