Re: Be careful which book you publically tear up
Ah. I'll admit that until this topic evolved into what we're talking about now, I had no idea that "atheism" was such a catch-all term for the general disbelief of a God (the details being in how/what/why/which part of the overall symbology and belief in God you choose to refute and the reasoning behind your refutation).
In any case, my strawmen are all unintentional (nor was it directed towards you, as you hadn't mentioned your stance). Those who are generally uninformed (such as myself) about matters of religion seem to do that easily (knowingly or unknowingly), as you've suggested. You're correct: "there is no God because there isn't any proof" is a simplified description of atheism and may or may not apply to one, two, many, or none of those here who choose to believe in atheism.
Reading more about atheism has made me realize I'm wholly unprepared to debate such things... debates about religion are so compelling that it's hard not to chime in, though (which is strange, since I usually steer clear of jumping into these conversations due to extreme apathy towards religion).
In any case, in reference to the original subject that started this topic I still maintain that the kid was deservedly suspended for discriminatory remarks against other students' religious beliefs. ;P
Barring further replies to this post and/or questions leading me to continue contributing to the topic, I think I'll concede that I'll avoid atheism/theism debates and bow out of this topic. Consider me a bit more educated on the subject.
