A long period of time turning big rocks into little rocks in a hard labor prison would be more my flavor for these characters.

I think you're going soft Ferris...

Being crushed by big rocks until those rocks turn to little rocks...now we're talking.

Re: Marines Investigate Puppy-Throwing Video

To clarify my position on puppies, I would sooner swerve to avoid one and hit a human pedestrian than squish a puppy. Most people I know would do the opposite.

That said, I find it terribly ironic that there would be such a heartfelt human response over the cruel treatment of one puppy all the while we are occupying 2 countries and routinely killing HUMANS with the same level of cruelty -- whether its marines or private contractors, they're there on our dime -- Don't kid yourself and say that bombs, scoped rifiles, and armored vehicles really any different than throwing a puppy off a cliff. Civilians on the business end of the weapons named above are often just as helpless and equally innocent.

I suspect that if that video turns out to be factual the puppy thrower may not make it back from the dunes. I'm sure there are some soldiers out there who like puppies.

Re: Marines Investigate Puppy-Throwing Video

There's plenty of outcry over the war...this thread, however, is about a soldier throwing a puppy...

Same. I greatly prefer animals to humans.

I don't understand what you find ironic. The war is for a reason (whether you agree with it or not). The US Armed Forces don't intentionally target innocents.

This video appears to show a Marine senselessly killing an innocent, helpless puppy.

These things do NOT in any way compare, and if you think they do, even after thinking about them for a bit, you should probably seek therapy.

The fact that it's unintentional doesn't make it right or just. And the fact that a certain amount of "acceptable collateral damage" is calculated into our cold arithmetic is morally questionable. But that may be a discussion for another thread.

The fact is, although the US military as an organization does not target innocents, and most soldiers take every precaution to avoid civilian casualties, there will always be a minority of soldiers that just do not care. People with personalities and empathy deficits like those of this marine here. Happens in every war - it's the ugly side we don't like to acknowledge.

So Switch is right, it is ironic that a soldier throwing a puppy off a cliff is met with such hand-wringing and gasping, but a missile strike on a family home that kills women and children (and may or may not have hit a Somali terrorist suspect) is just another line on the daily news report.

How do such people get past the screening? Is the organization that sloppy?

Maybe they didn't start out that way.

Re: Marines Investigate Puppy-Throwing Video

Paragraph 1 and 3 go into the "cold arithmetic" thread. Paragraph 2 stays here, where my point is that sometimes members of a good organization do bad things.

They don't really check for that kind of stuff because they don't really care. Why should they?

Plus what that marine did was not all that uncommon.

Farmers kill unwanted dogs and cats all the time. They shoot them, gas them or just dump them out in a field and let the coyotes eat them. I have witnessed, more than once, a gunny sack full of puppies or kittens being thrown from a moving truck, usually over a bridge.

Cruel? Of course. But it happens all the time.

There are many subjects we can apply to this logic, but does that really make it acceptable?
