Constitutionally the state is the final word, ie, no state has to except a federal law,HOWEVER the federal goverment will withhold money if they do not comply. One example is seatbelt laws. Many states bucked against it. And the federal goverment basically said if you do not comply we'll take your highway funding away. Personally, and no I'm not anti federal goverment. It seems a more sound idea, to allow states to generally decide social and moral debates for itself. It is obvious to me, that the morals of a ppl in a smaller region many times differ from those across the country. California GA have quite different views on subjects for example. Whats good for one state may or may not be acceptable to the local majority of another state. Weed, abortion, capital punishment, ect oppinions, though vary from person to person of course, if you look on a larger scale vary much more across the states. TX has a higher concentration of pro execution than say, california.
As far as is Lib vs Conservs. I think they allign in ideal terms but split in Morality and the goverments right or lack there of to decide if what you do to yourself should be decriminalized.
On a side note the way I look at it, if we're going to ban some things, weed prostitution, tatoos in some states(lol) gambling we may as well pull a demolition man and ban everything "bad for you" I'm not stating my oppinion either way, but if we're going to do something DO IT RIGHT or not at all. It seems a bit hypicritical to try and fake it in the middle. Ok you can go get drunk, but not smoke a lil. You can smoke tobacco, but we're ban it through taxation.
