New York Gov. Elliot Spitzer announces his involvement with a prostitution ring
My head just 'asploded.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/10/ny...3e6&ei=5087%0A ALBANY - Gov. Eliot Spitzer has informed his most senior administration officials that he had been involved in a prostitution ring, an administration official said this morning. I was one of his strongest supporters from early on, and I guess this is proof that image isn't everything, and our heroes just aren't perfect.

Re: New York Gov. Elliot Spitzer announces his involvement with a prostitution ring
Oh, he was just a customer. Well good for him! Unless...
Did he ever speak out against prostitution? Did he condemn those that use prostitution? If so, boo on him. But if he didn't I could care less. Now if he was involved in the running of it, yowza. edit--- I see he did condemn prostitution. Then he is a putz.

I have to say that I've always kinda hated the guy. Now I've got some newfound respect for him.
On my approved of scale, he just leapt from a 3/10 all the way up to 8/10. Always nice to know that at least some of our public servants aren't puritanical schmucks.

Re: New York Gov. Elliot Spitzer announces his involvement with a prostitution ring
@Gringo: Not just condemn. He was heavily involved in prosecuting prostitution rings in his last job as New York Attorney General. That's part of how he got elected as Governor.
And now it turns out he's a client. What irony... On a personal level, I don't care much. I'm not a New York resident, and I wasn't exactly hanging on his opinion of things to begin with. So it really just comes down to a sense of vindictive glee at seeing someone I already disagreed with take a fall.

Re: New York Gov. Elliot Spitzer announces his involvement with a prostitution ring
I know a lot of TG are republicans, and a lot of people are just turned off by his "My way or the Highway" style, but I personally had a lot of hope for his cleaning the crap out of one of the most dysfunctional state governments in the US. That's pretty much done now. Even if he keeps his job, he won't win re-election in a political climate that's already so charged that any little thing would explode... and this isn't exactly a light issue.

But he actively pursued them and, as you pointed out, used it as some moral/political thing to get elected. Makes him a bit of a hypocrite. I could even support actively going after "bad" prostitution rings that use slave labor or doesn't take car of their charges while looking the other way for "good" prostitution outfits. Something tells me he didn't do this.

Atleast you know who your Governor is Gloop.....Deval "what have you done at all" Patrick. I could care less that he was a paying member of prostiution, maybe this will make him more human. As long as he wasn't squandering your tax money away...who cares. Plus it is not in my backyard....

I love a good sex scandal that distracts us from the more important matters at hand.

Re: New York Gov. Elliot Spitzer announces his involvement with a prostitution ring
Yeah, I don't think this even comes close to one of the top ten worst things Spitzer has done that the public knows about, and it's certainly not the most hypocritical.
I'm disappointed that the article linked in the OP describes as Mr. Spitzer's "first scandal" his aides involvement in criminal wrongdoing. Spitzer is on the record saying that CEOs of companies should be held liable for the criminal actions of underlings. He even wanted it to be a crime to not know about such criminal actions. If he really held himself to the same standards he's used to extort money and favors from so many Wall Street firms, he'd be in jail right now. Well, at least we may get to see a Mann Act conviction. Neat. |

Re: New York Gov. Elliot Spitzer announces his involvement with a prostitution ring
Part of my anger might be jealousy... my friends joke around about 10k a night hookers, but the call girl service he used has 5,500 an HOUR girls.
From NY 1 News http://www.ny1.com/ny1/content/index...id=3&aid=79285 At just before 11 p.m. February 11, 2008, Spitzer, who the New York Times has identified as "Client 9," allegedly spoke with someone at Emperors Club VIP about payment for the service of a "model." The governor was allegedly told that the "Appointment would be on Wednesday." Lewis booked the "model" "Kristen" as "Client 9's." If the deposit arrived, she would be booked on a New York City to Washington, D.C. train at 5:39 p.m. to arrive at 9 p.m. The claim says "Client 9" refused to do "traditional wire transferring," which led to the need to wait for the deposit. At one point in a conversation with "Client 9," Lewis asked if the correct information was with the deposit. The client said "same as in the past, no question about it." A subsequent conversation among defendants revealed that the client still had a small balance in his account. During a phone call two days later, "Client 9" told another defendant that he had made a reservation at a D.C. hotel in his name for "Kristen." The deposit arrived a short time later and the "model" was dispatched to the train. In a phone call later in the evening on the 13th, "Client 9" was told that his appointment with the "model" would begin at about 10 p.m. The client asked who it was and was informed it was "Kristen." He replied: "Great. OK. Wonderful." The client inquired about passing extra funds to the "model" to build a reserve in his account. Lewis said he would "make an exception" and allow it. "Client 9" told Lewis that he wanted to "think this through" when asked whether the alleged prostitute "Kristen" would have to give her name to get a key to access hotel room. He referred to paying $3,600, which would "have a thousand on balance." "Client 9" later received another call indicating the door to room 871 would be left slightly ajar. Conversation continued to suggest that $1,500 or $2,000 "extra" would be best for future service. "Client 9" asked for a reminder what "Kristen" looked like. He said she was "an American, petite, very pretty brunette, 5 feet 5 inches, and 105 pounds." At 9:32 p.m., a call was receive by Lewis from "Kristen" that she was in the room. At 12:02 a.m., "Kristen" called to tell Lewis that she was in the hotel room alone, and that the appointment had concluded. It had "gone very well." She had collected $4,300. She said she liked him and did not think he was "difficult."

Now if he had been going to a state where prostitution is legal, could he have avoided this mess by saying -- hey, its legal.

Re: New York Gov. Elliot Spitzer announces his involvement with a prostitution ring
It was funny to see state republicans, with former Gov George Pataki standing in the back, calling for his resignation. Pataki had abdominal surgery last week and looked terrible.
It's possible Spitzer will resign, it's a matter of when.
