A private individual and free speech go hand and hand --- a public official who has a duty to provide equal treatment to all citizens cannot go on a discriminatory tirade and expect zero repercussions, even if she was doing it on private time.

Depending on the nature of the tirade there may be no action to take, but being a bigot certainly puts someones qualifications up for review.

I've watched the video again. I don't see any notion in that video that she ought to be censored. The video says that some people are listening to what their governmental representatives say, and that these people don't want to be represented by her. It says that words matter. None of that's a matter of censorship or punishment. Calling for people to elect officials who actually represent what they say is not calling for Sally Kern to be punished. Why don't you watch the video again.

I don't get your last sentence. What is that supposed to mean?

I wasn't aware that that debate is highly publicized in the US. When was the last time you read a newspaper or magazine article or saw a news report about the debate regarding whether the homosexual lifestyle is right or wrong?

Perhaps you're confusing the debate regarding gays and whether it's a right or wrong lifestyle with whether gay marriage should be legalized or not. Those are two distinct debates. Maybe you think that's getting old. Perhaps so. But, it does legally affect people's lives. So, people will fight for it; and so that debate will continue.

The debate regarding whether the gay lifestyle is morally permissible or not is pretty much over. There are very few professional ethicists who argue that the gay lifestyle is wrong. (I know of none.)

Fundamentalist Christians are really the only ones left that assert it's a morally impermissible lifestyle. They really have no argument. As such, there really isn't any debate. What's highly publicized is that there are such people.

We like to laugh at idiocy. The media knows that, and so they publish stories about these people. But, it's not a live debate in this country. It's not a live debate among professional ethicists.

Actually it's more than just fundamentalist Christians that believe it's a "morally impermissible lifestyle".

I agree that she is exercising her freedom of speech and she has a right to, but to hide behind closed doors and speak her mind instead of out in public shows how two-faced she is and that she know's it's unethical to say such things openly.

Sure she can preach anti-gay notions until the sun goes down but at least let the public know what her stance is regarding homosexuality BEFORE she runs for an elected position.

I believe homosexuality is as much a personal choice for the individual as hetrosexuality.

And the moral debate is very much still alive. On the net and in the papers... the media on the tv side seems to care more about the debate of gay marriage but everywhere else the moral debate about right vs. wrong is definitely alive and well.
