Humor was only a secondary goal.

Re: Sheriff Joe Arpaio
Wow. I'm amazed everyone has so much sympathy for these prisoners. And does no one care about all the positive programs? Like them growing their own vegetables and taking care of shelter animals? Maybe this guy is a little nuts, but heck, he definitely has a good grip on the prison budget, which is something most prisons cannot say. I feel that we should be spending less money on overcrowded prisons and spend more elsewhere, like wildlife conservation and environmental protection for starters.

The growing and caring of living of stuff is kinda cool though. That gets a +1 so now the guy is only -5 on the humanity scale. Want to spend less money on prisons? Legalize and regulate drugs. We had this conversation before, didn't we?

Re: Sheriff Joe Arpaio
A lot more money is spent defending and paying out lawsuits than is saved by his prisons. Conditions at many of his jails(not Tent City) are abysmal and unsanitary.

Re: Sheriff Joe Arpaio
I'd like to know of a jail that isn't abysmal and unsanitary. No jail is perfect, especially considering the entire system is flawed. Arpaio has his flaws and I do agree it is time for him to step aside and bring some fresh blood in but I do think he has some policies that are good for the law abiding citizens of AZ.

Re: Sheriff Joe Arpaio
Most of the jails and prisons here in Florida are not air conditioned. It may not top 130+ , but 100-110 with 90+ % humidity inside of a concrete box is not very pleasant. I can't imagine the tent being any worse than the concrete, might be better with a breeze.

It looks like the data is a bit fuzzy. This is the best I could find, although I don't know about the source. This quote is a bit telling, though... Quote:

Re: Sheriff Joe Arpaio
Does anybody remember the story about the jail with very low recidivism. The warden required absolute order at all times. No talking in the meal lines, eyes straight ahead at all times. No talking back. But they also offered many programs so that the prisoner can better themselves. And the warden demanded that he and the guards also show discipline and respect the prisoners.
The story was on 60 minutes I think. I want to say it was in California, maybe around San Francisco. Basic discipline and respect. That, I think, is the key for most prisoners.
