Re: History of TG
IMO things really started taking off here around the time of Joint Operations (near the end of GR). Even though that game bombed (queue BF2), it brought in a lot of people with its huge battlescapes and weapon choices. Then the site got streamlined and the supporting membership really kicked in, just in time for BF2. That's why you see most old-hats joined around '04 (even though they were around before then).
Then came WoW and 2142... which created another influx and evolution. Then came the newage RTS', turn-based, and browser game evolution. (currently) Along with Arma. The next evolution I see will be when AoC releases... then WAR. (things might get psychotic then) And then even moreso as more Tactical-MMOs get released and/or FPS's become more persistent (already a growing trend). We'll be a 1,000,000 post site soon.... Seriously, TG carries the uber-stick now. It's like having a rich Godfather who's name you can throw around to garner favors. I tell ya' I've really enjoyed watching it grow.

Re: History of TG
Hehe, I remember back when the Natural Selection SMs were a major "force" at TG. Ah... Good Times.... I may not be nearly the "old timer" here at TG that some of the other guys are, but I've been active long enough to see this community explode over the past 4 years.
I really never looked at Network 42 as Tactical Gamer in the sense some people do. Yes, it's the same guys, but it always reminds me of when my old company changed their name and, in the proccess, completely changed their "Mission Statement." They went from basic network cabling into a full-fledge IT service company. I view TG the same way in a sense. The community grew and evolved, while still keeping with the core ideals that it was founded under. I think the wiki history could be a lot more fleshed out, but then again that would take a lot of doing trying to remember all that has transpired and contacting some older members for their views. I'm sure you could fill page upon page with interesting information if you decided to beak it down via game (both successful and failure) at TG.

The source was an old germanic letter "thorn", which was closely related to the greek "theta". It originally looked similar to theta when written down, but the shape of the letter evolved over time until it looked more like a Y instead. Around that time someone came up with the idea of using "th" to represent the sound (probably due to the spread of Latin writing), and thorn wasn't used much anymore, except for abbreviations of short words starting with "th" -- such as The (Ye) and That (Yt). From that, we get the archaic "Ye Olde". "Ye" as a variant of "You" is totally separate and does use the "y" pronunciation.

Re: History of TG
The pop-up rep boxes are broken. But if you right-click on the rep button and pick "open in new window", it still works that way.

Re: History of TG
I killed a TGer with an MP5 on an old vanilla GR map (b4 J.O. released) and that's how I was introduced to TG. I remember it perfectly. That small city map where you can snipe from the skyscraper, with the downed chopper in the courtyard (blackhawk down). I was working the alleyway chokepoint (by myself of course because my pubby team sucked @$$) and took a few TGers out before getting owned. (I wish I remembered who was there) They were very organized and I was sick of getting mutilated map after map. Cant beat em, join em.
After that I started lurking the forums and eventually popped up on TS when J.O. released. It was then that I met Luna, Apo, Bear, Beep (I think), CD, and others. Luna was a psychotic medic with a penchant for getting herself killed trying to save everyone else, but very friendly and welcoming. TS was/is a real pleasure. Once the new forum went up I resubbed and away we went (BF2, WoW, 2142.... and on and on). I remember debating between "The Platoon" and TG back during my GR days. I'm glad I made the right choice, I think "The Platoon" is dead right? Those guys kicked @$$ though. Ok I'm rambling... history lesson over. Man it seems so long ago, but it was really only 4-5 years. That's a testament to the shear amount of stuff that's gone on with TG. It's like 20 years of gaming crammed into 5.

Re: History of TG
Yup, TG servers are by far the most enjoyable to play. CS:S was where I was taught the TG way after rushing like your average pubber. I got kicked by Root, came back and asked why I got kicked, and was schooled properly. Everyone was really helpful and friendly, though. Gaming was never the same again. Too bad I've been stuck out here in West Texas for the last couple of months and still can't get a connection fast enough to play anything other than WoW. I miss playing with you guys!
