Hey if you Brits don't like the Irish, Then Get out of Ireland. Seems bad that a simple comment about liking a truck sinks to this level.

I'm all for that, but we'd need to convince Tony Blair.....hang on, if you get Bush to say it, I'm sure his little performing monkey over here would pull right out....(and probably withdraw from Ireland too)

Re: Opinion article from local paper

From Yahoo today:

Quote:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (news - web sites), which published the study, estimated that 34,833 people in 2001 died from cirrhosis of the liver, cancer and other diseases linked to drinking too much beer, wine and spirits.

Another 40,933 died from car crashes and other mishaps caused by excessive alcohol use.
That seemed like a big number to me, so I hopped on to the CDC's website and looked up firearm deaths in 2001 (the most recent year). Turns out there were 29,573 firearm-related deaths, and 56.5% of those were suicides, leaving 11,671 homicides or "legal interventions".

In other words, alcohol is almost 7 times more likely to kill you than a gun unless you put the gun to your head yourself, in which case I'd have to give the gun odds.

Re: Opinion article from local paper

right, so how many of these people drinking were homicides, and there is your real statistics. hell of a murder making someone drink soo much alcohol that they ger cirrosis of the liver.

em duh...

so the odds again are, 11 000 for guns and 0 for alcohol.

equating suicide into the crime stats is stupid too because you can take your own life with a belt.

its crime and reason for having them in the first place.

Re: Opinion article from local paper

Dudeman, to the person who dies it doesn't really matter whether or not their killer MEANT to do it. If you get drunk and run me over or take out a gun and shoot me makes no difference.

So, again, 75000 alcohol related deaths, 29.5k firearm deaths. A death is a death is a death.

Re: Opinion article from local paper

erm yeah accept the alcohol related deaths were largely self inflicted, and if you want to call a spade a spade you get run over by a drunk driver you were killed by a ton of metal. not by the alcohol.

ok
