Re: Opinion article from local paper

Isn't that kinda like saying "you got killed by a bullet, not the person holding the gun"?

Re: Opinion article from local paper

MY POINT BEING, if people wish to equate alcohol to guns they can remove all disease from the picture, because disease is niether a crime nor intentional.

technically you are killed by a white hot piece of lead smashing through your body. cause of death on a death certificate is a guns shot wound, not a person shooting you.

i know it dont excuse the person, but if you want to say blah so many people died because of DUI then you have to remember if those people didnt have a car, they could not kill you with it. same with guns.

And I think Leejo was just trying to put our "gun violence" problem in perspective... There are obviously much worse problems in our country that are killing people... If banning things is the solution, then obviously cars and pools need to be outlawed...

Why do we allow people guilty of a DUI the continued ownership of a car? Why don't we pass a law that outlaws car ownership for drunks? Why are we afraid to take certain things away from criminals, and yet other things (guns) we want to take them away from law abiding citizens?

Re: Opinion article from local paper

well i would agree cingular that if a drunk person decides to drive his car and injures someone then they should no longer have the right to drive a car on public roads.

infact that is a good law to be proposed.

OK, but to propose taking cars away from law abiding citizens is kinda absurd, don't you think?

Re: Opinion article from local paper

no because cars are not designed to kill, guns are,

cars have an everyday use in every country in the world, guns are a plaything, they have use in the armed forces and police service, however they do not have any use by civillians other than to kill things.

Re: Opinion article from local paper

The issue isn't cars, it's alcohol. Guns don't sit around and shoot people any more than cars start themselves and slam into other cars at intersections. Alcohol has no more positive use than firearms do, in fact many would argue alcohol is more destructive than firearms. The stats (75k deaths vs. 30k deaths) show clearly that alcohol is 250% more deadly than firearms. Do you want government telling you that you aren't allowed to make decisions about when to drink?

The question is what role should government play in addressing these deaths? Shall we ban everything that might be misused or deadly?

I'm going to need a "for example" to counter DudeMan's argument.

Gimme a break.... Are you telling me that you are equally ignorant? You can't think of any reasons to have a gun other than to kill things? I just lost a huge amount of respect for you, Pokerface.

Skeet shooting for example.

Self-Defense for another one (and before someone even suggests that this is the same as Dudeman's statement, consider this....You buy home/rental insurance to protect yourself in case your house/apartment catches on fire, it doesn't mean you are going to go out and set your house/apartment on fire.)

Gun collecting
