Re: High school status

I'm the class clown. Majority of people like/are neutral about me. I hang with mostly the geeks and freaks (Better sense of humor imo) , and the 'thug' kids at our school seem to think I'm a hoot.

Re: High school status

I went to 5 high schools, ranging from the most depressingly lame public HS in mill-town SC to one of the top boarding schools in the country (fortunately I started at the former and ended at the latter), and my social life varied. I played several sports, acted, made good grades, and got stoned a lot, so I had a pretty diverse group of friends.

A couple of people I've never met have assured me that I am only in the 3rd standard deviation from the norm. Nonetheless, my intelligence was always something that was an issue in grade school. In first grade I was sent to the third grade classrooms to get my reading assignments. In 5th grade I started calculus and sat in a 6th grade class for english. In 6th grade I was sent to a Jr. High school for a few weeks in order for the powers-that-be to see how I'd do if I skipped a grade. I skipped 7th grade, so in 8th grade I was the kid who'd skipped a grade. Etc.

All of this is to say that while I was around several cliques and friendly with them generally, I was never IN one of them, or at least I felt that way. I think it took 25 years to shake the feeling I had in 1st grade walking into a classroom full of strangers twice a day and their all staring at me.

Now I couldn't care less. One of the really cool things about getting older is gaining control of the people with whom you live, work, and socialize. To quote my main man Chuck D, "If I can't change the people around me, I change the people around me."

In H.S. you're stuck.

Re: High school status

There where 26 people in my graduating class. I think that says it all.

Re: High school status

I was definitely a nerd, but I had friends on the "grunge" side and a few friends (or at least acquaintances) on the popular side. There were the one or two people who picked on me, a few handfuls that made fun of me but never did anything beyond verbal. I was kinda middle ground, just didn't really care too much.

My personality changed greatly post-HS (more joking, outgoing, etc). If I had gone to my 10-year last fall, I doubt people would have recognized me beyond my face anymore.

Re: High school status

Until high school, I was a pretty hard working student. I was in the gifted program, etc... heck, my mom told my elementary teachers to give me extra work and not tell me - to keep me busy. I'd finish the normal work very quickly. I didn't even know that until I was in college... thanks mom.... ;-)

IN high school, a couple of things happened
a) I was viewed as a nerd in the negative sense (so insulted, etc)
b) I was bored. Easy work, teachers didn't try to challenge me, etc..
c) My dad had cancer. He ended up dying (along with my grandfather and uncle) my first semester at college
d) I was depressed from above and other things

End result: I stopped trying. If the homework didn't get done at school, it didn't get done. Thank god I was smart enough to still have a 3.6.

I was bullied and because of the depression and a little suicidal (kind of wanted to die, just didn't want to do it to myself or hurt my mom/dad), I didn't care about what they could do to me. You want to fight? Fine... let's roll. Oh? Did I hit you with a DESK? So sorry. I never started anything. My father was in the military and made it known that I couldn't cause trouble. I couldnt' start a fight, but I was allowed to finish it. I was polite and helpful to the teachers and students (that weren't dillholes, as I said)

I didn't take part in any sports. Just wasn't caring enough. Wish I had now. I was in the science club, but only because I liked the teacher. She was a friend of the family. I was in honors program and took most of the higher classes, but just had no clue what I wanted to do.

I had about 6 good friends. I got along with anyone who wasn't a dillhole. If you were a decent person, we got along. If you were a bully, trouble would follow since I would NOT take it anymore. I delt with crap like that from the 6th grade on. Four of those friends are still good friends 18 years later. We still talk, play games and hang out. 2 of them disappeared (vampires get them?).

I was a voracious reader. I read a book a day (and still read about a book every 2-3 days now... fatherhood takes away reading time ) My friends and I like games of all sorts, played Dungeons and dragons and loved BAAAD movies. We'd hang out, watch the worst movies we could find and make fun of them (the original MST3K).

Not sure if that really answers your question... but there it is.
