Making mistakes is part of being human. Thus us not being able to solve a problem is pretty human.

Nobody's perfect after all.

True, not being able to solve a problem when confronted with it in immediacy would be so. But my point is that we have 30 years. 6 billion people with 30 years to figure something out. The idea that we would fail at solving something with those kinds of odds stacked in our favor is so mind boggling that it hurts to think about.

While I highly doubt this is what Frenian meant... I immediately thought of:

And yes, if 2012 doesnt kill us all, I dont think we will have much trouble wiping this thing out.

Ferris, I saw your movie. You used to be so cool and easy going. What happened to you, man? You've changed! :P

Well, Earth is probably due for another cleansing. Remember the "age of the dinosaurs?" Whatever creature evolves next is gonna know us as the "age of the humans," when they find all our fossilized cities and skeletons. I wonder if the next intelligent creatures will stem from cockroaches or rats. Hmmmmm.

Cancer has been a practical problem for humans for thousands of years. Hippocrates writes of several kinds of tumors. Yet, with all of this time and so many people working on it, we haven't come to any solution.

I started playing PR and dealing with smacktards on a daily basis. Takes its toll mentally. Plus, working a 12 hour day and being barfed on twice by two different drunk idiots who got in car wrecks makes for an unhappy camper.

Re: 13 yo German boy pwns Apophis (and NASA)

OK, a warning here--this is a subjective assessment. It's not without evidence or reason, not without synthesis or multiple sources of information--but I can't cite it all. It's an article in the New Yorker 13 years ago, and a book I read by an obscure reporter 6 yars ago, and several 2-column blurbs in the Wall Street Journal, or SF Chronicle, or Wired magazine, or Nature, or The Lancet, or The Memory Hole, over years and years...it just adds up to a picture. Here's the picture I see.
By the time Apo comes around, our current ecological, economic and social trajectory places us somewhere between "totally screwed" and "Barely Surviving", the way I see it. A extinction-level impact would just be the coup-de-grace.

Perhaps it's some vast fear-mongering conspiracy, but all the different and disparate pieces of information seem to indicate things are getting horribly bad, and not slowing down at all, but rather speeding up--nonrenewable resources are actually getting used up (we have about 6 years worth of Helium left apparently, reported WIRED, in an offhand way).

The collapse of ocean ecosystems is worldwide, and being observed by every kind of scientist, expert, old-timer, aboriginal native, etc. from large fishes down to phytoplankton and

The earth's poles are due for a flip. Overdue, by some estimates.

Ocean level rise is an almost definite eventuality in the next 50 years. Glaciers are receding in every report I've read or heard.

Habitat destruction worldwide is increasing, not decreasing. That's not hard to confirm.

Antibiotic-resistant and immune strains of Flu, candida, septicemia, and other bacterial infections are increasing yearly.

Worldwide demand for fossil fuels is increasing, not decreasing.

Worldwide use of fossil fuels is increasing. (China, India, SE Asia)

Solar storms are not only happening slightly more frequently, they're getting stronger, sometimes making it through the magnetosphere. Our next solar cycle is shaping up to by quite spectacular, by the way...time to make that faraday cage.

Worldwide banking and financial markets are now tied to the fate of fiber optic cables and computers, and are buoyed by fantasy money--a worldwide credit/debt/I.O.U. pea-and-shell game. Do you have any idea how unreal a number like a 'trillion' is when you're talking about money owed? A trillion seconds ago, the year was about 321 AD.

When I was a kid, I remember a landmark study came out before the term "global warming" had even been used, showing that the atmospheric changes and anomalies (Big ozone hole, CO2 levels, photochemical aerosols, forest and grassland destruction, etc.) and their effects on fish, amphibians, plants and air quality, were a result of the atmospheric pollution that had been going on in the late industrial revolution. In other words, a 50-80-year lag-time between our actions and observable effects...
It also said if we didn't make a huge change in the next 20 years, it really would be too late to do anything about most of the damage that would be taking place, it would be a done deal. We haven't really slowed down on much of that, even the ones that it is thought were phased out. For example, CFCs have been banned in most developed countries...and the amount of those that have been phased out doesn't come close to offsetting the increase of use in developing countries and in the black market.

There are quite a few more, mostly having to do with what the military has (that we know about) and the state of the world geopolitical/religious gang war that is escalating.

bleh, what a rant. I really shouldn't let myself do this, I need my sleep.

I agree with Axis. That is what I was hinting at in my post. Hell with the conditions I am expecting an asteroid hitting Earth may very well be a mercy killing.

I thought everything he listed was a problem but I wasn't too worried about it. Until this week I watched Crude Awakening, The end of suburbia, and Life at the end of Empire.
