Re: ebook hardware

Most physical books I read have no color. For me, color would only really be useful for technical journals with color illustrations.

I'm mostly concerned with eye fatigue, and for that the paper-like nature of the Kindle is what has me intrigued.

But I'm also worried about portability of the format: If the Kindle tanks as a product, do I lose my investment in content? It's like having all my purchased movies on Betamax tapes.

My worry EXACTLY.
I don't want to spend $400+ (not including the cost of the book files) to later have it worth nothing. That's why I would hope that eventually, a common format would be adopted. Or some program that could convert them.

Additionally - it doesn't seem like the kindle version of books are that much cheaper than the physical book. Which leads me in another line of thought. How much of the $8 for a paperback goes for what? I mean $8? I've seen some pretty thick books that might be worth the $8. But I've also seen some that are about a centimeter thick. I ain't paying $8 for a centimeter of thickness. Halfprice books/used at Amazon/yard sale - here I come!

I like the look of the sony read. I don't like the two big buttons on the left side of the kindle. I have a feeling I'd accidentally change pages A LOT. but you need the keyboard for the kindle's wireless stuff. What might be cool is if they eventually included a palm pilot style writing system later on.

The sony is also giving away the 100 classic books - probably in an effort to counter the other options (wireless, wikipedia, etc) that the Kindle has.

Re: ebook hardware

The current technology doesn't have a white background. The background is actually a light gray, but it isn't white (especially not in less-than-sunny-lighting).

Having color would be a big plus for me since I will probably own one of these devices in the future and use it to read all the various documents and PDFs. Having black "ink" on a white background and still have some color pie charts (or whatnot) while preserving the battery life would be ideal.

You can get most classics in eBook format for nothing online, through the Gutenberg Project.

Basically anything that's considered a "classic" and printed before 1950 can be found there in electronic book format.

You can get all of those from Google for free for your kindle, no?

Re: ebook hardware

While reading a newsgroup for an ancient DB I use, I came across a question about how to convert output from the guy's program for reading on a Kindle, and this answer was supplied, for converting from PDF to Kindle:

http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?p=159387

One can then jump to the main page of that site, which covers all things ebook:
