Re: Can you hear this?

A couple of weeks ago, that sound was used as a ringtone for pretty much everyone at my school. That was basically one week of complete havoc.

it has to be higher than that.

people with astute hearing can hear up to 20khz or so. i've tested myself, and i seem to miss anything above 18khz or so.

that sounded more like it was around 16khz. high, but low enough that anyone with a decent set of speakers or headphones should be able to hear it

Teen Repellent?

This is hilarious. I don't have anything against teenagers or anything, but this article cracked me up. First off, I never knew there was such an object for sale. Secondly, the ACLU is really steamed about this one. Since when was loitering a civil liberty? Maybe it's cruel, but only if someone decides to stay right where they are. We have the freedom to leave the premises if someone wants us gone.

Re: Teen Repellent?

If you've posted no loitering signs only to have them ignored, then frankly I think this is a great way to get teenagers to move along.

Re: Teen Repellent?

I saw a news report on British TV about this about 2 years ago and then another news report about 6 months ago where the teens are fighting back. In many English schools the kids cannot turn their mobiles (cellphones) on in class. So they took the sound that they can hear but adults cant and made it into a received text message tone. So in class they hear the tone that they've received a text message and the teacher is oblivious to it.

EDIT
It just occurred to me that the company that makes the teen repellent device, proably sells the mobile (cellphone) tone to the teens

just found an article about it
the kids did the mental jump to turning it into a ringtone and the company quickly cashed in selling the ringtone and it sells well

I gotta hand it to the kids (and the company) for that one.

Re: Teen Repellent?

I had someone use that as a cellphone ring tone. It would be quite tempting to find the device and break it... And I'm 22, and can still hear that frequency.

Yes, I have to admit that one is very creative!
