Ah, I see now. You wanted Cheney to promote Wind power and Solar power rather than relying on old-fashioned stuff like "oil" and "nuclear". Gotcha. I mean, we do have the largest solar power plant in the world over in California, but that's not really important. What's important is that in 1997, when we represented such a huge share of the solar market, the solar market as a whole was so tiny that a 40% share was still almost meaningless. Solar was a mere tenth of a percent of our energy generation. Supposing we had tripled our solar power output in the next ten years, that still would have offset only one or two percent of the growth in power consumption that occurred over the same time period, leaving us to make up the 98% remainder with *gasp* oil.
There is a theoretical future where solar technology is so advanced as to provide us with all the energy we need. I believe they call that a "Dyson Sphere". We aren't there yet.
