Re: Key Scrambler Software

Oh, if it were me, I'd already have a system in place that would require a lot more than just a new operating system to evade (think MitM, but permanent). I already offered to set up something like this for my father, but he said he'd rather just install the key logging software he purchased.

Anyways, morals of the situation aside (feel free to start another thread), I just want information about software that will accomplish this specific purpose (scrambling keyboard input to a key logger).

Easy solution: Brother moves out from family domicile.

My guess based on lines like this...

Re: Key Scrambler Software

I think receiving keylog reports with scrambled/nonsense information would throw up a big red flag and immediately increase the scrutiny factor your brother is subject to.

IMO, a good and quick option would be to use a Linux boot that doesn't allow the key logger any opportunity to capture info. Then only use it when needed, otherwise use the PC normally and allow the reports to be sent.

Re: Key Scrambler Software

He's decently proficient in dvorak, just leave the keyboard in qwerty and type in dvorak. Then have a pidgin plugin run a regex and turn the nonsense into english, or whatever you guys speak.

I've been meaning to do something like this so I can use computers at school to write papers. The only issue is that I can never see what I said, so I have to be totally focused, or learn to read dvorakified qwerty. (A bit like using `ed` to edit files, kinda.)

I mean, it's really easy encryption that anyone could break, but I don't think your dad is going to bother. Then you need to look into something else.

You could even write a pidgin plugin that changes the text in the window to something that your brother can read, so the conversation is easy to follow. If the program grabs screenshots, I guess you wouldn't want to do this.

Or, perhaps, if he's worse in dvorak than I thought, chance the keymap to dvorak and type in qwerty. Should be easy the other way around.

Good point. So first priority is to achieve financial independence. Depending on the situation, perhaps heading for the nearest shelter might be an option.

Any chance you could use public Internet access to communicate? Like from a library. You could register a free email account while there that you never use at home.

Re: Key Scrambler Software

He could even use the family computer and avoid being logged. He could reboot to Linux and avoid being logged. This is what we do right now. However, he does type too fast and make a lot of mistakes, and the key logger has the fortune of recording all characters except backspace and delete. Not only does my dad normally have to parse through all sorts of poor spelling with integrated corrections, he also has to deal with the spam from games and things like that. My brother uses the computer a lot, so chances are my father wouldn't have time to read it all anyways. My suspicion is that he searches for key words.

A potential alternate solution using pf on my brother's OpenBSD machine is filtering outgoing mail from his computer (the software reports directly via email) and silently removing data. This is a much better long term solution and will require less work, but isn't feasible at the moment for multiple reasons.
