Music in games..
Well I just downloaded and listened a whole whack of songs from snes games (available here http://www.snesmusic.org/spcsets/). After the enjoyable session of music I realized how great the music was in some games. It made the games so much more enjoyable.
Some of my favourite music comes from Megaman X (the best), Megaman X3, Top Gear and Earthworm Jim. This could be due to the fact that these were my favourite games and I had some attachment to them, but I think the music is genuinely great in these titles. Just wondering which ones were your favourite if you do recall the music. Which ones got you pumped up when you played. Have a listen to some in that archive they bring back some great gaming memories. Seems to me as though music takes a backseat in games nowadays to all the eye candy. However in a game like megaman x, the music had me really pumped. edit: forgot Donkey Kong Country ![]()

Re: Music in games..
To be perfectly honest.. I never really paid any attention to the music in games.. hell I usually just turned it off. I am more of a sound fx guy.

Re: Music in games..
I constantly whistle tunes from games ranging from River City Ransom, Star Control 2, to other newer games. I've found the music is passed over in many games, but there's still quite a few good soundtracks to be heard present day (Halo, Unreal Tournament, etc).

Re: Music in games..
I'm with Ender on this, I'm straight to the option to turn off the music.
The only one I didn't was Wipeout with the Chemical Brothers banging away, or the Fifa menu screens. Last edited by Benny_; 09-30-2004 at 10:43 AM. |

Re: Music in games..
To this day, I still love the soundtrack from Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn. I have the music ripped and converted to MP3. There's also a tune I still remember from an old PC beach volleyball game called Kings of the Beach. I think it was also on the SNES.

Re: Music in games..
Kings of the Beach was on the NES. I know, I have it. :) Fun to argue calls, nice to chill to the tunes.
Can't say I've been a fan of any Westwood RTS. Loved the music in Warcraft 2, including the "disco" track. I despised Total Annihilation, but never returned it. Listened to its orchestral scores in my CD player. :p I have Top Gear for the SNES; it has an excellent musical backdrop. My favorite racing game(which also has great music) is still Rock 'n' Roll Racing however. We've occassionally had rounds of "name that tune" at work. I've pulled songs from the Final Fantasy series, Zelda, Mario, and even Lagoon(anyone here played it?). I win a lot. >:) [edit]Oh, and I turn the music off whenever I play competitively.[/edit] |

Re: Music in games..
I think for the most part I add my own music into games, but if anyone that's played Half-Life or Half-Life 2 could back me up on this, the music in SOME games is incredible.
I almost wish they made a soundtrack for HL2. If they have one, please, someone, direct me towards it. The music tracks from Mario Brothers, Blades of Steel, and Top Gun were always a favorites of mine as well. (On second thought though, maybe that's because all I own is an NES. )But yea, I'd have to agree with Lirix. If I really want to focus, my music is uaually off. ~Renagade

Holy thread ressurection, Batman!
Well, to respond, ... I get Tetris music in my head to this day. And I still find myself whistling Mario Bros. songs and FFVII music. Meh.

Re: Music in games..
I enjoyed the music from Uplink, Darwinia, Deus Ex (1 and 2), Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines, Halo, Mafia, Rome: Total War, Starcraft, Gish, and Max Payne: 2.
For sound effects in general, anything by Alex Brandon. Especially including the Thief series and System Shock 2. |

Re: Music in games..
I always thought the soundtrack to area88 a.k.a. UN Squadron was cool. The game itself was a side-scrolling shooter like Raiden or R-Type. The soundtrack is pretty jazzy. It's worth a look.
Zephyr: OCRemix is awesome. |
