Re: Sea Sheperd jerks blame Japanese ship for their actions
Whales are interesting. Also, they have huge eyes. I am against the unnecessary killing of interesting, huge-eyed animals.

Cows have pretty big eyes - about the same size as elephant eyes... I'm sure they are interesting to many people too. There are lots of cute cow stuffed animals.

Re: Sea Sheperd jerks blame Japanese ship for their actions
x2. I enjoy most other mammals. I've had just about all the standard big game of North America and conclude Elk rocks. I've also had many a varmint and wouldn't mind branching out into other mammalians. If I can eat a whole baby octopus, why should I not get a slice of Shamu?
The interesting thing about the show referenced above, is that many things we would consider taboo to eat in the US or even Europe are considered standard fare in many other regions of the world. However, most of those things don't fall under cute and cuddly with the exception of guinea pigs. Wait....time to take pitchforks to Peru....no more slaughter of pets on our watch, they belong in a small cage to be playthings for children.
I understand the cliche of picking your battles, but if whales are sacred, then every other non-human creature should be sacred, not just the ones hot hippie chicks think are cute.|TG-12th| tHa_KhAn

Re: Sea Sheperd jerks blame Japanese ship for their actions
Well this discussion is getting more challenging, and more interesting by the page, but I'm afraid of derailing the topic. Still I will continue untill asked to stop.
I will need some time to thoroughly look at what you posted sordavie. And perhaps I can distill my statements to a point that allows to move on, beyond the form of the debate again.
Your (Sordavie) last posts were actually quite helpful in clarifying what you mean exactly, so I think I will be able to get ahead and perhaps learn something, like increased diligence in how I voice my ideas.
Side notes:
-To me the sandbox is usually not a debate, more like a discussion between drunks in a bar, that usually ends with me getting punched in the nose for not being patriottic enough or not loving the military enough. Funny when I'm not even a us citizen
. It took me some pages to realize the level of discussion others are expecting. I welcome it though, I just didn't expect this.
-Rhetoric has to do with logical reasoning but in essence is the art of persuasion. Playing on emotions, character assasination (ad hominem) etc, are very much part of it.
"Rhetoric normally explains the three arts of using language as a means to persuade (logos, pathos, and ethos)*(from wikipedia)"
I merely stated what the art of rhetoric would advise me to do to win the argument in the eyes of the other people in this thread. When you lose a logical rational argument, rhetorics recommends trying to win by other means. I have actually done my best not to follow rhetorics, and try and engage in a rational discussion. I admit it is hard to resist my natural inclination though, and I have slipped into it a tiny bit a times. By mentioning rhetorics, I was merely showing that I am doing my best to resist my desire to castrate you, in a psycho-analytical sense off course
.
For now I'll part with one of my favourite jokes, that anyone still interested in this topic is sure to appreciate:

Re: Sea Sheperd jerks blame Japanese ship for their actions
Of course everyone should recognize that one ought be persuaded only by rational argument. Sure we're all persuaded to believe things by appeals to emotions all the time. But most reflective people recognize that those actually aren't very good reasons to believe. Most people will agree that you shouldn't believe what someone says merely because they're a good orator - even if in fact good orators may persuade many people merely by being a good orator.
The problem here is that I'm critiquing the rationality of your line of thought. So responding with other methods of rhetoric is just not effective. That's because rationality trumps these other methods when critical thinking is brought in to play.
It's just not effective to appeal to emotions or ad hominem when the idea that appeal to emotions and ad hominem are logical fallacies becomes salient to those following the discussion.

Sure, fall back on emotional argument when your customer is the typical man in the street yahoo. But when you have to sell to someone with patience and reason, emotional appeal will just kill your pitch. Some of us can smell snake oil from a mile away.

Speaking of sustainable fishing (yeah, I know, whales aren't fish), check out the problems of eating shrimp:
http://www.alternet.org/story/145369...ghtmare?page=1
In his book, Bottomfeeder: How to Eat Ethically in a World of Vanishing Seafood, Taras Grescoe paints a repulsive picture of how shrimp are farmed in one region of India. The shrimp pond preparation begins with urea, superphosphate, and diesel, then progresses to the use of piscicides (fish-killing chemicals like chlorine and rotenone), pesticides and antibiotics (including some that are banned in the U.S.), and ends by treating the shrimp with sodium tripolyphosphate (a suspected neurotoxicant), Borax, and occasionally caustic soda.
Upon arrival in the U.S., few if any, are inspected by the FDA, and when researchers have examined imported ready-to-eat shrimp, they found 162 separate species of bacteria with resistance to 10 different antibiotics. And yet, as of 2008, Americans are eating 4.1 pounds of shrimp apiece each year -- significantly more than the 2.8 pounds per year we each ate of the second most popular seafood, canned tuna.Dude, seriously, WHAT handkerchief?

Tasty big bugs, yeah. We should probably switch to eating a more sustainable bug, like the cockroach.
