Re: Here is a smoking question to ponder.
i'd by all means tell person #2 that the smoke is really bothering person #1 and that person #2 should be advised to not smoke in the building.
if not *fantasy*, person #1 shall fire bomb person #2's place and make sure that person #1 has enough fire extinguisher to put out any "naughty flames" that are going beyond person #2's apartment. okay, i'll shut up now :P |

Re: Here is a smoking question to ponder.
There's nothing wrong with asking somone else to curb some behavior if it's causing a problem for you. I don't believe that in this particular instance the complainer would have a LEGAL leg to stand on, but courtesy would dictate that if you're causing someone else some grief, you tone down whatever it is you're up to.
Additionally, if the problem is bad enough that you threaten to move out, your landlord may jump in and either fix the building or speak to the other apartment owner to see if the behavior can be curbed.

This would be after trying to do it the "nice" way first, of course... I'd find out just how much the smoker is smoking. If he's only smoking, say, a pack a day, then there's nothing unreasonable about his activity and it would be unreasonable to ask him quit smoking in his own home. If you're polite about letting him know about your problem, however, he may change his habits voluntarily. If that doesn't solve the problem, I'd then advise the landlord of the problem. If that doesn't work, I'd talk to my lawyer. Politeness is required throughout and in my experience, a letter from a law firm clears up 99% of little problems like this without any further action.

Re: Here is a smoking question to ponder.
As a non-smoker who lives with a smoker, I have to say that I think the guy who isn't smoking has a right to at least politely address his concerns with the smoker. If it's just a whiff, then you need to decide if it's worth the effort. But, if your clothing, your hair, your furniture are saturated with cigarette smells, that's way over the line and worth complaining about. Remember- smokers don't realize how much they can stink, or how much their smoke lingers. They can't smell it like we can.

lol
You just proved luna's point. A nice red shirt doesn't look nice above pink jeans. Just because it's cinammon gum doesn't mean it's going to solve the problem and, in the right situations, it can make it much, much worse.

Re: Here is a smoking question to ponder.
Cologne and Trident do not cover up the smell. It really only makes it worse- the mixing of smells is just as overpowering and smells just as dirty.

Re: Here is a smoking question to ponder.
yeah and what all you non smokers need to learn is, that nicotine is an addiction. and just asking the simplest of tasks such as smoke less is not easy and will not be recieved well.
its an addiction, you need it, it is not just being greedy or indulgent it is surviving the day. for those who have quit, well done good job. but you think how hard it actually was. and then put some of that into this discussion. so far all i have seen is smoke smells its bad for you blah.... no actual recognition that this man may also feel bad for smoking but cant help it.

Cinammon, "ice", "spearmint", "SW30"... pick your flavor. The points stands. Ick.

Re: Here is a smoking question to ponder.
FYI, milk chocolate (y'know, a Hershey's bar?) kills the odor/taste of cigarette smoke in the mouth. If you're smoking in an enclosed/non-ventilated area where the smoke sticks to your hair/clothes, you're outta luck...
I used to hate the smell of smoke. It bugged me a lot, until that one drunken night in Okinawa... Now I'm an addict... I quit for a while on a bet with another guy that was trying to quit. Once I won the bet, I lit up a victory cigarette... I am noticing that chest colds are harder and harder to get rid of, though, and that concerns me. I've never had a smoker's cough before, even after running 5 miles or so... Not that any of you are even remotely interested in this information... I'll shut up now.
