I haven't actually read about this in depth. Are we able to calculate where on the planet it's most likely to impact if it does?

Re: Asteroid
Well, no. All of these odds are based on how close it gets to Earth...we'd have to be much closer before we got it down to the exact hour, etc.
HOWEVER, things changed drastically today. This morning, the odds were 1 in 37, based on however many observations over the last 190 days or so. But this afternoon, the odds have been decreased to 1 in 56,000. I would have thought that that meant they'd just figured it wouldn't hit, but they also changed the observation time to 287 days. If I read this right, it means NASA thinks this is an object they'd looked at before and had data on it already, and just now figured that out. The whole projected orbit has changed. Before, they had 34 project potential impacts. Now? 8. I'm betting someone just got their ass handed to them. We'll see. |

From Slashdot:

![]() Or is it now being covered up by the government so that Buschemi and Willis can start their training? Or was it all just a political "wag the dog" story to begin with? Something to guage how well the public can handle this type of news?

Re: Asteroid
On a semi-related note, NASA is preparing to launch "Deep Impact" on January 12 and this spaceship will impact with the Comet Tempel 1 on July 4, 2005.
