I actually love tornadoes.... not when they hit me, but I am facinated by them. What if your town was hit by something common or so?
Example..

Memphis: Tornado
Mountains: Landslides
Rivers: Floods

They are all big, common or not

About the only really bad thing that happens here are hurricanes. But they're so rare that its not even a problem (the last one being in what, '98?).

But there's a difference... what happens in Cali happens every single year. Yet people still continue to live there, knowing full well that they might not of lost everything this season, but could the next. And why do they live there? Because they're rich, and need big expensive houses to prove that.

Yes, its sad that this guy lost is entire family. No body should be going through something like this. But what do you expect living in an area thats known for having land slides every year?

Do you realize how large California is? Do you realize that you could fit Massachusetts into "Southern California" several times? These mudslides don't happen in the same area every year...

California (with the exception of the cost of living and the politics) is an awesome state. No matter what you're looking for, there's someplace there that you would think of as paradise: beautiful beaches, gorgeous mountains, swamps, deserts, and everything in between. If your family owned a house in an area where the property values kept going up and up, you'd be reluctant to move, too!

I've lived in coastal towns on both sides of this country, and you east coasters don't know what you're missing until you've experienced the Pacific Ocean. It truly is an amazing difference.

That said, I've got little sympathy for this guy... He gambled by living there and lost. Too bad for him that it cost him his family. I, too, am a heartless bastard, though...

Jeeze this is a rough crowd. Maybe Luna could help us start a "Jimmy Wallet, suck it up" fund to see if we can raise $1.50 for the guy to call someone who cares and maybe get a bus ticket.

I'd rather reply by saying that regardless of your ability to shrug your shoulders and say "What was he thinking?" the man deserves to be free of heartless criticism, at least until he is able to put his wife and three babies to rest.

It's a natural disaster that residents thought had been taken care of by the building of a retainer wall previous to the event. It turned out the landslide was far larger than anyone could have anticipated.

Geeze, guys. I can't believe I'm even needing to reply in this way. The man must be suffering beyond comprehension. My sympathies to him and what's left of his family.
