Hardcore or......

Yeah,

I know, as soon as you saw "Hardcore" you all thought RYN snapped and posted some porn...sorry to disappoint you...and if you are...get a girlfriend.

I'm sure this will bring some interesting debate...however I'll save my opinion for last.

Re: Hardcore or......

Well there goes his Supreme Court nomination but I doubt his troops will mind it too much.

Churchill once said that nothing is as exhilirating as being shot at....and missed! I think that everyone who plays our TG games can imagine, or knows, the "thrill" of combat. Is shooting people fun? Well, probably not that exactly for most soldiers. Is it thrilling? From everything I've read, yes.

It was an irresponsible thing for him to say to anyone but young troops in the field (a la Patton's famous speech). I bet he was wearing a stupid parka when he said it, too!

Republicans and their damn parkas. When will they learn?

His candor was misplaced for his audience. I imagine that the thrill can be quite enjoyable (ala the Churchill quote), but pointing that out in a panel discussion isn't the smartest move this general ever made.

Thank god our Generals (the ones actually commanding on the field) are not concerned with being PC and "choosing his words more carefully". Just don't let him get in front of a microphone. But don't chastise him for enjoying what he is trained for, paid for, and good at!

Two people I'd shoot and say "Whee!" http://www.local6.com/news/4161751/detail.html

Not to hijack the thread totally: generals today have to understand how the media plays a role in modern warfare and demonstrate competency in that part of their job. I'm sure this guy is a superior marine and great in the field, but I'm afraid this incident will be a career-limiting event for him. He may not care, and that's fine.

Career limiting? He's a Lieutenant General... There's only one more star available to him. Topping out with three stars is hardly what one would call a "limited" career... I'd say his career as a Marine is fine, if he was considering a career in politics, then you may be right.

Re: Hardcore or......

Sorry. Back in the day when my father did litigation for RJR a jr. associate drank too much at an event with Ross Johnson, the then-CEO of RJR, in attendance and threw up in front of him. The next day a memo went around the office describing the "career-limiting event" of the night before. That's sort of become part of my vocabulary.

What I'm saying is that the Lt. General will probably retire soon the way that captains of ships that run aground retire soon afterwards.

Re: Hardcore or......

Yeah, but he's near retirement anyway...

After reading more about this general, I've got another viewpoint on this issue. Not one that the general public probably cares about, but veterans and active duty military might: This guy has never shot at people in combat. Sure, he's led people into combat, but he's never been the guy with a gun on the ground. He was a junior officer during peacetime and his only combat experience has been as a commander telling his junior officers what he wants done. I don't know if someone that has actually had to kill someone else would say something like this publicly. I suppose he could be talking for his Marines, verbal bravado that a leader sometimes needs to express, but I'm not sure that's appropriate for a LtGen. making a speech to anyone other than his own troops...

Ahhh yes....that's the one I was looking for. Agreed. Nice research.
