Attention Smart People
Does anyone here know if there are actual legal ramifications to admitting a person under the age of 17 to an R-Rated movie? I know there are rules for harder fare on the books, but I'm not clear on whether or not the MPAA rating system carries with it the weight of any state or federal laws.

if you read the actual wording on movie ratings, it says "without parent...." R says it I know....
here: http://www.mpaa.org/movieratings/ nc-17 says no one under 17 period.... r says not without a parent, pg-13 and under carry no real restrictions.....

People have been legislating morality since the dawn of time. What's new is the idea that this is inappropriate. And who decides where to draw the line?
Murder is bad, but maybe statutory rape is ok? Statutory rape is bad but pornograpic images on TV that will probably be seen by children is fine? Porn on tv is bad but showing up at a public pool with children present wearing a thong and nothing on top is ok? Etc. Put it another way. Is it ok for a child to see an r-rated movie? If so, is it ok for Michael Jackson to take your son to see The Crying Game? Or a teacher to show it in class at school? |

But turning a system devised and applied by private concerns into something with punitive weight tossed behind it is a little batty, to say the least. I'd like to think that if government wanted to get in on this action, they'd make their own judging body.
