Re: Riddle

One morning, a family vacationing in California sees something quite amazing. At the same time, on the other side of the country, a man sees something quite ordinary on his way to work. Although they're completely different things, they bear the same seven-letter name which contains all five vowels. What did each see?

Re: Riddle

HA! I had a teacher who asked us this when the car first came out. Sequoia.
Heres my contribution: Number Buying.
Housing numbers (you know, the kind that you put up on the wall in front of your house to tell people your address) are for sale at the local hardware store, so Frank, Jim, Betty and Dave all go strolling down to buy numbers for their apartments. Frank buys ONE, which costs him two dollars. Jim buys TWO which costs him three dollars. Betty buys ELEVEN which costs her 5 bucks. Dave buys TWELVE, how much does he wind up paying?

As far as I can tell, this is the correct answer, for the following reason:

Let P(x) stand for the Price of x, where x stands for a string of characters. Then we see that P(AB) = P(BA) = P(A) + P(B).

Code:
From the problem description:
P(ONE) = P(O) + P(NE) = 2
P(TWO) = P(TW) + P(O) = 3
P(ELEVEN) = P(ELEV) + P(EN) = 5, P(EN) = P(NE)
P(TWELVE) = P(TW) + P(ELVE) = n, P(ELEV) = P(ELVE)
  1. 2 + 3 = P(ONE) + P(TWO) => 5 = P(O) + P(NE) + P(TW) + P(O) = 2P(O) + P(NE) + P(TW)
  2. P(EVEL) + P(EN) = 2P(O) + P(NE) + P(TW) => P(ELEV) = 2P(O) + P(TW)
  3. 3 - 2 = P(TWO) - P(ONE) => 1 = P(TW) + P(O) - P(O) - P(NE) => 1 = P(TW) - P(NE) => P(TW) = 1 + P(NE)
  4. P(TW) + P(ELVE) = 1 + P(NE) + 2P(O) + P(TW) = 1 + P(O) + P(NE) + P(TW) + P(O) = 1 + P(ONE) + P(TWO) = 1 + 2 + 3 = 6

Principles of good Sandbox Etiquette:
Assume good faith - Be polite, please! - Work toward agreement. - Argue facts, not personalities. - Concede a point when you have no response to it, or admit when you disagree based on intuition or taste. - Be civil. - Be prepared to apologize. In animated discussions, we often say things we later wish we hadn't. Say so. - Forgive and forget. - Recognize your own biases and keep them in check. - Give praise when due.

Treat others as you would have them treat you

Betty's blonde, isn't she? Why didn't she just pay $4 for two ONE numbers?

If that were the case, they would have been buying letters, not buying numbers!
