Re: Riddle
More of a math problem than a riddle, but.....
In your family orchard, you've harvested 3000 apples and are ready to deliver them to the market. Your horse-drawn wagon can carry no more than 1000 apples at a time, and for every mile it's pulled, the horse eats one apple. So, what's the maximum number of apples you can deliver to the market 1000 miles away? (Hint: You can leave stockpiles of apples along the way) |

Re: Riddle
There are 20 people in an empty, square room. Each person has full sight of the entire room and everyone in it. If you are not allowed to move in any way (other than your eyes). Where can you place an apple so that all but one person can see it?

Trip 2-3: repeat the above twice more, giving you a stockpile of 1998 apples at the 334 mile marker. Trip 4: Load up 999 from the stockpile and travel 499 miles, then stockpile 500 apples at mile marker 833. Trip 5: Repeat trip 4 with the other 999 from the first stockpile, giving you 1000 apples at marker 833. Trip 6: Carry all 1000 remaining apples the last 167 miles to market, giving you a total of 833 apples available to sell -- plus a very fat horse who would probably fetch a good price at the meat market. ![]()

Re: Riddle
He cant eat apples on the way back if there are no apples in the cart. All back-tracks have a stock of zero, so the horse can steal from the cart all he wants, but he wont get anything.
Unless your implying the horse wont move without food as an incentive? That changes the math slightly.

Re: Riddle
Ok, math assuming the horse needs food to keep going:
Trip 1: Take 1000 apples 200 miles downroad, drop off 600, last 200 are eaten on the way back. Trip 2: Take 1000 apples 200 miles downroad, drop off 600, last 200 are eaten on the way back. Trip 3: Take 1000 apples 200 miles downroad, meeting the stockpile that is now 2000 total. Trip 4: Take 1000 apples 333 miles downroad, drop off 334, last 333 eaten on the way back. Trip 5: Take 1000 apples 333 miles downroad, meeting stockpile that is now 1001 apples at the 533 mile mark. --Have 1 apple for lunch Trip 6: Take all 1000 remaining apples directly to market, losing 467 more and having 533 to sell.

Re: Riddle
Oh! I have a brand new one I heard the other day that I can contribute. It will likely actually require quite a bit of questions, unless you have heard it before. Here it is:
"If he had seen the sawdust, he would have lived."

Re: Riddle
Yes, he is blind. No, he's not old nor does he use a cane. No wood chipper, either.
