Yes I regard the cold war as a success. Certainly Europe should - having beaten back the USSR on somebody else's dime.
In any case, right up until Reagan won the cold war, the liberals were certain he was losing it, and terribly. When Carter was president, the liberal position was that parity with the USSR was inevitable, that we should make peace with them and accept the world as it was.
They were dead wrong, and yet their reaction to Reagan's success now is that he had nothing to do with defeating the USSR. Never mind that they were dead wrong at the time. They're dead wrong now, too. Pressure broke the USSR. Economic, military, and diplomatic pressure, applied by Reagan over the dismayed protests of most of Europe and domestic liberals.
