you're talking about my friend?

well, the fact that she IS the israel i guess she has FIRST hand experience with the palestinians...i don't think she "hates" them but she doesn't think they are sincere about their peace process.

Re: an uneasy peace with the palestinians...

ha, our posts crossed in the ether Nightfire. I was responding to Tempus's post. Yours and Wolfie's hadn't shown up when I fired my little comment off.

I've had a number of chats with H-Hour, who's living in "the occupied territory" right now - seems a loaded description to me - working with Palestinians on the http://electronicintifada.net project. From what he's told me, I'd think that many of them have the same opinion of the Israelis - they don't "hate" them but don't think they're sincere about the peace process.

I don't care. They need to work it out and nobody can make them trust each other. When Israeli children start blowing themselves up in "Palestine" to the delight of the Israeli people then they'll lose my support.

Re: an uneasy peace with the palestinians...

The whole relations between Isreal and Palestine is murked in history and in last century events.

For one, you have a conflict of religion. Most Palestinians are of course, Muslim. There is a very quaint verse of the Suran I will paste for you to read, something I have been told by people who are Bahai Muslims.

Sura 9:[29] Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the Religion of Truth, from among the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.

You decide the meaning of that for yourself. Now do you really want to know why there is so much violence between Isreal and the Palestenians? There is much much more.

Isreal was formed in 1947 by the United Nations, and was to be placed in the land of Palestine, where the land would be divided into two new nations, an arab nation of Palestine and of course, Isreal. The Palestinians rejected this proposal, and many wars ensued in which arab nations joined together and attacked Isreal, but were defeated.

The current conflict is but a shard of a shattered mirror of the big picture of what is happening there. Some say the hostilities were erupted anew when Ariel Sharon entered a holy site to both Israelies and Palestinians some years ago (Ariel Sharon was in the Israeli army at one time, and is blamed by many Palestinians for slaughtering many of their people).

Peace between the two? Highly unlikely, considering that many Palestinians wish for Isreal to die, and for the land to be reclaimed as their own once again.

Fair point. If I have jumped to conclusions I appologise. I do think it matters be careful with langauge on these issues though.

Grey, your post is a good summary of the situation. Of course the Israelis would point to historical and biblical "evidence" that the land was theirs hundreds of years ago.
