I'm sure we could list several legal addictions. But the thing is, it's none of my business what you're addicted to until it infringes on me. Then, depending on how exactly it infringes on me, I have a right to know some or all of the details.

But regardless of how many details I have, it's unlikely that it's my right to ask you to stop that addiction. For that to be my right, it would seem to me, I would have to be incurring some form of damage due to your addiction.

Smoking is just the only example of a legal addiction I can think of that, by simply DOING it, you're physically damaging the bodies of those around you.

2nd hand smoke doesn't hurt you anymore than car exhaust or flatulence. The "scientific" studies that say it does were concocted by the anti-smoking lobby to provide "proof" for lawmakers who want to legislate it away.

If smoke bothers you...go away.

You guys have hit upon the limit that laws should affect smokers. Smoking should be restricted only when it has an effect on people that can't voluntarily escape the 2nd hand smoke.

Non-smokers can choose to not patronize a restaurant/bar/office, therefore, laws should not restrict smoking in these places, the employer/owner should place the restrictions.

In a PUBLIC building, I don't oppose the gov't putting restrictions in place regarding smoking. These are places that people MUST go to in order to function in our society. There are no alternatives...

REMEMBER THIS: Legislation restricts freedom. Period.

But who's to say that all those saying that the scientific studies are bull**** dont work for the tobacco companies? IMHO the propaganda runs both ways.

I find it funny that smoking is harmful to those who smoke, yet when you breath in the 2nd hand smoke it does nothing to you... think about how stupid that sounds.

This is the exact attitude smokers have and why, every time somebody lights up in front of me, I politely ask them to go away.

This part right here is totally true. But I dont see that restaurant\bar staying that way for very long. After a few people leave because of the smoking, they're going to rethink they're plans of allowing people to smoke.

Exactly. Capitalism works. If people want non-smoking restaurants/bars/whatever then the market will produce them. If people are ambivelant (sp?) then the market will produce whatever appeals to the greatest number of people...

I just want to kick my nasty habit.

I actually HATE cigarettes...however the tobacco companies have sunk their hooks into my brain...keeping me addicted to a highly addictive narcotic.

The worst thing about quitting (and I have quit...once for 3 months and once for 1.5 months in the last year) is that the first 3 days are hell...and i mean HELL!!!!!

Just when you need it most...due to the cravings...your mind will wander off and everything around you turns to sh|t. I call it swimming...it's like your mind just swims off away from you and you feel totally lost and disoriented.

I really DO want to quit....however mustering up the willpower to fight the craving is VERY difficult. I've only been smoking for 4.5 years...If I quit NOW I know I'll have a very good chance at a healthy and happy life. I just wish i could get some help.

P.S. - The overweight analogy wasn't intended to piss anyone off overtly...it simply was intended as an illusionary device to portray how smokers feel about non-smoker harrassment.
