We had our bout with cost cutting measures as well. This was when NASA was suffering under Dan Goldin's "Faster, better, cheaper" mantra. Well, we lost 3 Mars missions under his watch as they were made 2 fast, 2 cheap and nothing was better about them. The most famous failure we had was the Mars Observer. Which was lost mid-course due to a metric - English conversion failure. However, since the Space Program was given the green light for bigger budgets and to hire more talent, we may be in a 2nd Renaissance for Mars exploration: much like in the Viking days. I really can't wait to see if our 2nd probe makes it, "Opportunity" , which is scheduled to land on January 24th near the Martian arctic. If we make this double shot without a hitch, the amount of science we're gonna get in return will be astounding. Not to mention the awsome refining our manned space mission profiles will enjoy. Of course, as a Geologist I can't help but be excited about these sorts of things. ![]() |
