A United States citizen is being held in a foreign country for expressing his opinion. This is news...

Fair enuf Cing, I agree with Geisha. There is no excuse for what he has done (or more realistically we have been told that he did) and he should be punished within the laws of that country. But yes it probably (read definitely) is to do with the current situation.
The fella that got whipped in Singapore for vandalism, good. The people that get killed/life for drug smuggling in the east, good, he gets a fine for doing what is essentially a dickish thing to do, good.
I do the same anywhere else, I deserve what I get.
So I still say screw him he's an idiot, you've got plenty more over there, one less won't make a difference. (I'll admit that last part was added to spice this up a little)

I thought he was breaking the law and that was why he was being held? Either way I still don't see it as news even if you do use bold type :P

Thanks,

J.

And again...none of you know the circumstances surrounding the event.

This thread has been "much ado about nothing" in my opinion.

I havent said anything yet, but I have been reading this since the beginning and now its time to comment.

1) I am sure there is a lot more to this story then what was being reported. There is no way a respected pilot is going to flip off customs agents for no reason, especially in a country like Brazil where they chop your head off for thinking about something.

2) From reading the article, it sounds like Brazil did this new rule out of spit and not for the same reasons we did it for.

3) I really think Brazil is making a mountain out of a mole hill just so they can get it into the papers and show how "disrespectful" Americans can be... to them I say a big "FAH-Q".

I will say that yeah, I agree, he shouldnt of done it, but we dont know why he did it and probably never know why he did it, so let it go.

The last I heard, they were fining him US$13,000. That's a decent chunk of change...

You are just as correct as I... My point was that a foreign nation is using this dumb American pilot as a political pawn when he did something that normally would be handled otherwise. This IS news... :P

$20 - $12000

don't make much difference, the dollar is so weak now anyway

I believe the company paid it didn't they? Not really the point though. You are right on the political side of it, but at the end of the day, he did something wrong, they took umbridge, and over reacted to make an example. Everyone does it, but in the light of the Brazil vs. US debate in customs process, it kinda accelerates.
