So tell me... why are FDA approved drugs not allowed? These drugs help rebuild broken down muscles, so they heal faster.

The reference to LASIK is just bringing up the point that "performance enhancing" is subjective.

well if they are used to heal broken mucles fine, but you cant use these and play sports at the same time, why? because exercise actually damages muscle and your body makes new ones to get better, therefore to simply heal your broken muscle is fine, but to use the drug so that you are simply building muscle quicker is a missuse of the drug.

as for the rules on healing an injury i dont know what they are, but to use them to gain excelent sports results for the sake of building rather than repairing might be an argument in favour of the rules.

But that is not completely true for all drugs. There are plenty of drugs that are allowed to help you heal faster. Are we restricting this rule to drugs that affect muscles only? If so, why?

What if there is a "natural" substance that can help muscles heal faster. Is that illegal? Does the fact that something is a drug and not a "herb" make it illegal?

Let me also bring back the LASIK situation. An individuals eyes may heal on their own, though not quite like muscles do. Does that mean drugs or surgery that increases speed or effectiveness of the healing process should be made illegal in sports?

Here's the funny part... there are no rules, at least not in baseball. Baseball has no rules about performance enhancing drugs. The rules define the limits of the game and equipment used but say nothing about what a player may do to themself.

All "performance enhancing" restrictions are put into the collective bargaining agreement. This is one of the reasons it has been considered a weak regulation. It's not a rule.

..... remember, all these arguments are showing the grey subjective area that is being covered by these rules. I think people hear about all of the problems with some steroids and their side affects. This causes all sorts of drugs to be lumped together in this "bad" stigma.

Indeed. Remember in the last Tour de France, when that biker was accused of cheating because he used painkillers to "help" him finish the race with a broken, what, collerbone? "Performance enhancing", I'm sure...

I think the bigger problem is that so many athletes are in it for the $$$ now instead of for love of their sport... No way to get rid of this via rules, though...
