I've owned one of these. We got rid of it because it wasn't practical with 5 cats. But if you have fewer, I would highly recommend it.

Bump to recommend Aquafina FlavorSplash water. I hate water, can't stand to drink it... But this stuff is palatable for me, especially the citrus flavor.

Also, I haven't seen it recommended elsewhere in this thread, but Tivo. I'm not big on television the way some people are, but being able to record the things you are interested in, with no advertisements, and not being a slave to the time slot, really changes the way you view television. |

Re: What product would you recommend to anyone?
There are really only 2 products you need to live a full, healthy life. These two products are Weetabix and Firefly.
Weetabix. Firefly. Thank me later.

![]() I've hacked the thing to high heaven though including an Apache web server that allows me to get on the thing through the web and manage the recording schedules, season passes, and even add new messages to the "mailbox" if desired. My modem fried a couple years back so I hacked in a PCI Ethernet card and get my updates over the net now rather than using dialup. One advantage of being an early adopter was the $299 lifetime subscription. I paid $299 way back when for the service and haven't paid a dime since.

yeah but for 300 bucks never to pay for tivo again, and by the sounds of it he just needs a microwave modded to his box and he would never have to leave the living room

Re: What product would you recommend to anyone?
I second the recommendations for Littermaid, the Foreman Grill and Tivo.
When I recommend Tivo a lot of people say, "I don't watch enough TV for a Tivo." I have only a couple shows I like to watch (Scrubs FTW) and actually limit my brain numbing to about an hour a day. This is the very reason I love my Tivo. I can watch an hours worth of TV in 44 minutes. And, I can't stress enough, I recommend ONLY Tivo. I've used a few different DVRs that friends have owned and none of them come close to the DirectTv Dual-Tuner Tivo UI. Cing, I'm not quite as cheap as you, but I bet I'm much lazier. I did the whole throwing out the Littermaid containers when they got full thing and, even with emptying twice a week, it really wasn't too bad - cost-wise - but I was way too lazy. So I built a platform to put the Littermaid on and then cut the bottom out of a container and attached a 5gal trash bag to it with a rubber band and let it hang. The trash bag would actually take months to fill, but I change it every other week or so just for hygiene reasons. FWIW: I would seriously avoid MythTV unless you are truly the epitome of Geek. It's just not ready for prime time yet, and I doubt it ever will be. The problem with open source is that it is rarely well-planned or supported. Software developers are not necessarily the best planners and no one wants to work on the boring projects unless forced to do so. Note the use of the word "rarely". There are some very good quality open source projects out there. Which reminds me: I recommend Open Office to anyone that doesn't want to pay outrageous prices for a word processor package. |

Re: What product would you recommend to anyone?
This is kind of a meta-answer, but Cool Tools is a site run by Kevin Kelly where people submit things they swear by, similar to this thread.
Personally, if you cook at all (or have a loved one that does), good knives are crucial. I use a Global Chef's Knife, (in addition to their Utility and serated knives) and it's a pretty popular brand at the culinary academy where I teach. Wusthof's are supposedly the gold standard, and have a very liberal lifetime replacement policy, but any decent knife will make kitchen work so much less painful. Unless you slip and cut yourself, that is. These knives are very sharp. Another item I use daily are my Shure E3-c's with my iPod. Super high quality earbuds that are great at sound isolation, even on planes.
