Re: Flag burning amendment

I don't understand flag burning. It's like saying "Hey this organization gives me the right to burn this flag, so to show my hatred of it I will destroy the symbol of this right"

I think banning burning is absurd, though.

Re: Flag burning amendment

Wow, pretty good consensus here.

I would add that I would never burn a flag, and it would boil my blood to physically witness it. I think it would be far worse, however to feel as if the flag were a sacred idol which you could not touch. The flag is flying because we want it flying, not because there is a law that says it must be so.

I can't help but laugh, in a way, when I see those in America that burn the flag. It's because of the rights the flag represents that they CAN burn the flag and yet they wish to destroy it. That has got to be the definition of hypocrisy and for that reason alone I say....need a match?

Re: Flag burning amendment

Short answer: I can't EVER imagine a time in which I would burn an American flag; far too many of our boys have died under that banner for me to desecrate it. However, what those men were dying for, in my opinion, is for the foundations of freedom which that flag symbolizes. It's somewhat of a tribute to this Great Nation, that someone can burn such a sacred object and NOT be prosecuted for it.

Yeah, I'm somewhat surprised... I thought that the last time this issue was brought up, that there were a number of people that supported the amendment.

Re: Flag burning amendment

Perhaps someone should just burn the amendment bill.

Re: Flag burning amendment

I have burned a flag. It was desecrated by some friends of mine by signing their names in the stars. I burned it out of respect. My burning was completely legal, but to make burning the flag out of hatred a crime means you have to somehow criminalize thoughts and, apparently, it's this type of tyranny we're trying to rid the world of even as we discuss this very issue.

FTR My flag will be flying upside down this Independance day to signify the distress I believe this country is in, especially after today's announcement by Justice O'connor

Please elaborate on the distress. why are you so concerned about Justice O'Connor stepping down?

Re: Flag burning amendment

If that bill were to ever pass I guarantee you all that more American flags would be burned that day than any in history.
