Re: No more supersized fries!

Interesting article. I hadn't heard of the movie, but it's a little silly since there are ways to eat not-quite-so-bad at fast-food restaurants anyway - order burgers with only lettuce and tomato (no sauces or cheese or salty pickles) - order water to drink - get salads without dressing and avoid the crunchy fried bits - get the plain baked potato at Wendy's - etc.

If the government were driving this I'd be upset. Since it's strictly market-driven, it seems perfectly logical to me. McDonald's wouldn't do it if they thought they couldn't make money anyway or make even more money off the good publicity. The market drove them to offering supersize fries to begin with. Now public sentiment is driving them to remove them from the menu. So be it. I just hope this is indicative of a slightly more health-conscious US. It doesn't really show anything either way as to whether we're becoming more responsible for our own actions. *shrug* Maybe McD's is just really jealous of the "Jared" campaign.

My problem is that a few people here seem to be thinking along the lines of:
1. Fatty Foods = bad
2. Stupid people will gorge themselves, get fat, and die.
Solution: Take away the ability to eat fatty foods.

I would rather be the one to make that choice, not someone else.

Speaking of: it's lunch time.
Except that isn't what is happening. No one is saying "stupid" people will gorge themselves, so let's not let them have more frenchie fries. Those people are perfectly capable of saying "I'll have a big mac and two large fries" as opposed to "I'll have a big mac and a super-sized fry". No one is trying to stop them from doing that. On the contrary, I would even wager that McDonald's will make MORE money off of those people than they currently do. Supersizing is what.. 39 cents? A whole additional order of fries is well over a dollar.

In the meantime, McDonald's makes the press for appearing more health-conscious.

I think you're reading too far into the intent of the change. It makes them money. Period.

I was thinking of doing a documentary on misleading documentaries (watch out Moore and others!!!), do you think I would win an award?

Or do I need to twist facts and lie in a documentary nowadays to have a chance?

Probably. I'm mainly just pissed that in this country, companies are forced to be 1000% more responsible than the people who buy their products. I understand informing people about general dangers, but it can get ridiculous.

Everytime you see a warning label on a product (no matter how stupid it sounds common sense wise), it's 99% likely it's there because some idiot tried it out. I'm surprised guns don't have a label on them like:
Warning! Point away from face while firing!

I think this is actually a great idea. No one needs that much grease in their diet, and if they still really want more, they have to buy another fry.

amen

what is totally sick and absolutly disgusting about these fast food chains is that they give you twice the daily recomended calorie protion in on big mac meal. with a milkshake. they make no attempt to warn people of this. most people when asked will say oh its naughty... maybe half the days allowed etc etc... little do they know that the beef burger described as 100% beef. therefore a consumer thinks must be good. contains 70% beef fat. still considered beef.

totally crass and hazardous. cheapskates with no reguard for their fellow citizen.

i dont eat macdonalds anymore. havernt touched it in 4-5 years almost. i think.

I might point out that McDonalds does list its nutrition content of all its foods and has been for some time now. And anyone with a little bit of common sense knows that a burger with fries and a milkshake is loaded with calories and saturated fats.

Re: No more supersized fries!

Small sidenote: I lost almost 40 pounds by eating nothing but fast food burgers (minus the bread).

maybe they do in the usa not in England, and if they do it isnt on the packaging...etc

and i dont agree with your common sense argument. the fries, i would think are the fattiest thing yes. but i have cooked myself a quater pounder with less fat in and the milkshakes are ridiculous they dont even use ice cream any more. so why so high... because its packed with sugar.

they advertise it as easy food and you see the regular skiny super models eating it. its all to do with brainwahing man...

and what about kids... the adverts are aimed at chilldren the big bloody clown.... and i have seen this first hand the parents get badgered into buying a happy meal on the highstreet. it just isnt on man.. plus they took away root beer so they are evil....

It's not what you eat, it's how you eat it.
