Actually, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan is the war which the sign talks about. We were discretley involved in that war, and with the experience of Vietnam we helped the Jihad fighters, including the Taliban and Osama Bin Laden, draw out the war into a long guerilla conflict that eventually bankrupted the Soviet Union. In the big picture, Ronald Regean had very little to do with ending the Soviet's rule, and if anything it was pope John Paul II that had the biggest political influence aside from the war.

Re: Shenanigans!

Wow do I disagree that Reagan had little to do with ending the Soviet's rule. It flies in the face of a lot of evidence. It does please me that folks who fall over themselves to deny credit to Reagan have to hand it instead to the Pope. I guess Christianity has done at least one good thing in their minds.

Reagan would credit the American military and taxpayer for ending Soviet rule, too. The cold war wound up being an endurance race and we could stay in the game longer than they.

Ok no more History channel for leejo! LMAO

You know your stuff leejo, you really do. In a nutshell, the Soviet Union spent itself to death and the gipper had a big part in that. As for Iraq, Afganistan and this entire war on terror I think everyone can agree that it will be the HISTORIANS who will tell us if Bush did the right thing or not.....you know where I stand

About the success of beating the cold war and winning the space race to put a man on hte moon, among other things, that should largely be credited to JFK.

I am not trying to be stubborn. I would like to know what exactly Regean did to topple the soviet union, compared to what happened during the 60s period, the Afghani war in the 80s, and the lifetime in which John Paul spent against fighting communist rule, especially the Soviet Union, which he did long before he became the Pope.

Re: Shenanigans!

Google it then!

I really don't want to get into a debate about it. Hell I didn't even like Reagan until I was 30 and I never failed to credit him for the end of the Soviet Union. I have noticed some revisionist history over the last 5 years but that's the nice thing about the internet. To guote the guy: facts are stubborn things. All the info is out there a-plenty.

Re: Shenanigans!

Hey I am new to this section fo the forum, heck even TG itself. But I am going to quote something that I had read the other day, some may have seen or heard it before, so be gentle if you would please. Oh' also, I am tryiing to do this from work as well so word for word may not be exact.

There was a man who overall was not heavy on politics, was not over zealous about lettting everyone know who or what he thought was best. But one day he had seen some odd things happen, he had observed a few people using there given rights to protest what is going on in Iraq. he listened to them complain and heard all of there arguments, he was polite the entire time. The man then kindly walked away and pondered this argument that they had.

Now in his mind he see's the validity of what the protestors are saying, but in reallity it cannot and will not work as they wish. Reasons why, in this world, with this type of enemy it does not matter if you leave, or move away, they hate you on multiple levels, it will not end you just have to contain it.

So, after all of this thought, the man decides that next time he has a run in with the type of people he just left, he would take action. "let the kind person state all there arguments, facts and reasons of why we should not be where we are, and why we should just leave everyone alone. Then "BAM" punch him in the nose, when he gets up, say wait you do not believe in protecting yourself, you think that you should not retaliate, that you should turn the other cheek. When the guy gets to his feet, "BAM" hit him in the nose again. When he starts to get up, say wait. You think it is alright to let someone do this to other people, to let them hurt and mame others, and think it is ok to stand by and watch. When the man gets up again, repeat all the above actions until the guy admits, he is wrong.

K, i am off my soap box sorry.

Re: Shenanigans!

Ha! Welcome my main man!

I suggested to a friend of mine a few years ago that if he really wants to understand "containment" (as was the suggest policy towards SH) then he should buy a rattlesnake for his 2-year-old daughter and put it in her room at night. Put it in a tank, place a cover over it with a rock on top. There! Perfectly safe, until the snake gets out.

samantics at its best, contain, hold, surround, block. Whatever terminology is used, does not matter. In the end, humans are humans, and in this country you can say and do as you please.
