I'm enjoying this thread for some perverse reason. Just as a different angle, some people may have children on welfare knowing that it ups their income. So someone who is struggling and cannot get out (or possibly cannot be bothered to get out) see's an easy option, which, I think is where Wolfie is coming from, albeit starting from an extreme tack.

Suggesting that people who cannot afford the consequences should not have sex, is quite simply stupid in my opinion.

The heart of the matter as I think has been pointed out, and is just as pertinant over here as over there is identifying and reducing benefit fraud/abuse. Not targeting parents who have made bad decisions/had accidents.

If we all waited until we were in a financially perfect position to have children, the world would stop tomorrow..

no but you offer no viable solution to a very very small ($1) problem. it is nit picking and you make it seem as if we are all being screwed by these molitious welfare fraudsters...

Actually I did propose a viable solution. I suggested community/charity time as a form of punishment. They would have to repay society for the debt they would owe, satisfy my principle of paying for one's choices, and benefiting society as a whole.

Wolfie, if you add such a requirement, someone has to manage it. Did the recipient actually perform the service? When are they supposed to perform that service between finding/keeping a job and raising the new child? What happens if they or the child gets sick, if they leave town for some reason, or take a second job to try to get out of the hole they're in?

How many forms and new federal employees need to be added to support this idea? The cost of administering this program far outweighs the cost of just letting these folks sit in their own mess of a life. If someone wants to make babies to get rich off of welfare, well....good luck.
