I'm pretty good with geography, but I blame my parents for that. We travelled a lot when I was a kid.. Had visited something like 43 states and over a dozen countries by the time I graduated high school, including living in Japan for 2 years and on a shopping trip to South Korea we visited the DMZ and I went about 10ft in to North Korea . You figure out where stuff is when you go there

They may lack in geography skill, but they do know how to read, the continent of Australia is labled as "North Korea" (and possibly "Iran") on that map. The pressure of the camera and the incorrect lables may make some people do stupid things.

Being born in Europe, I can say that the Amis have that reputation. But after living here for more than a decade I can say that there are well educated people and some that are not so well educated. They do seem to be a little childish, which can get dangerous with that big army, but so far only small insignificant countries like Grenada, Panama, Iraq, have been invaded.
Part of the reason may be that this country is so big that you can spend your whole life in one state and never get to know someone who eats, speaks or thinks different. Lots of talk about individualism and diversity, but if you woke up in the outskirts of any american city it would be hard to tell where you were. Give it 500 years and the states and cities will have enough of a character that they are easy to distinguish.
In Germany in some places I drive for 1-2 hours and I am in France, Italy, Switzerland, Czech republic or Austria. It would be easy to tell where I am.
Anyhow I am rambling. Like everywhere there are stupid people and not so stupid people. They are just a different kind of stupid.

The most precious 'st00pid american' moment i have ever witnessed first hand was during high school. My school was hosting a small group of students from England for about 2 weeks. Early in the first week a bunch of students from both schools were hanging out having one of many 'getting to know you' chats. This one kid from my school says to one of the english girls, in a completely serious tone and with a straight face, "your english is really good, how long have you been speaking it." Oh my god... everybody died. The poor kid didnt know what was going on and someone actually had to explain his faux pas. Priceless stuff. still makes me giggle.
