Because you live in the UK, I am assuming you are a native born Brit, I don't think that you can fully understand the culture over here. Just as I can not fully understand the culture there. Like what's up with that bread pudding crap? However, gun ownership, IMO, is not only a necessity but is a right. When we successfully threw off the colonial yoke those rights were given to every citizen under the 4th amendment. Studies have also shown that communites with higer percentages of concealed carry permits are safer communities. Of course, any study can be skewed to a particular viewpoint.

As far as the drinking age....I know that drinking alcohol in Europe is much different than here in the states. It is much more liberal. But then again so is the European continent. I however, tend to agree with the drinking age of 21. 18 is too young to be responsible enough to drink. Too many things can go wrong. And to head off an argument coming...Some people will argue that if you can be old enuogh to fight for your country then you should be old enough to drink. That is true to an extent. The military offers a controlled and trained environment. They teach you how to kill and be proficient in your particular area of expertise. Bars, saloons and pubs don't.

And since you don't advocate gun ownership how do you propose to keep the citizens safe from criminals who do have guns?

ok first im not answering your question for no other reason than i will be causing an argument. trust me, and consult other members here, you will not convince me carrying guns is a brilliant thing., so no offense but that was not my point,

please read what i am asking, i am not saying you have to lower your drinking age, i am questioning the validity of the age which you are alowed a gun... you want a gun good for you go ahead thats not being debated, but an 18 yr old is considered responsable enough to own a gun but not drink....

what i am merely ding is drawing a comparison between the two assumptions, drinking is treated as more of a threat than owning a gun, if the age limits were the same i dont think i would see an argument, im not even sure i think 18 is too young, i certainly dont think its too young to drink, and i dont agree with private firearms ownership anyway, so i dont know whether i think 18 is too young...

but to me, having a drinking age higher than that of owning a firearm, is ridiculous.

I'm not sure how rifles and shotguns work out, but if you've even been commited to a mental institution: you are no longer elligible to legally purchase a handgun. When I bought my first rifle about 3 months ago, they ran the same standard background check they did when I bought my pistols. Hence:

If he actually did buy a shotgun when he had a mentally debilitating illness, the gunstore owner or the system is at fault.

If he stole the shotgun, then the owner of the firearm was at fault.

Granted, neither of them pulled the trigger.

Rather than go for logic on this, let's just jump on the knee-jerk reaction of: "If we didn't have guns, we'd have no murders." It's funny, because if he had brutally stabbed both people and himself to death, there wouldn't even be an arguement.

let me make it simple for you...

i... me am not discussing your law, on private gun ownership, but rasing the question of was this a legal purchase, and the comparison to drink and how utterly daft that sounds...
