My first negative ebay experience and feedback

I purchased a poster for dirt cheap. I checked his feedback and it wasn't bad. Must have been in transition. Three weeks later I haven't heard from him or received the poster. So I send him an email asking what the status is and I state that I would rather not have to leave negative feedback.

His response; "Hey, I have sent you e-mails and the poster was sent. If you leave me a neg you will get one right back. I dont respond to threats. Item was sent and I dont know why it has not arrived yet but I do not like to be treated this way. I was out of town for a week and I just got back. do what you like but you will get a negative also if you leave me one. I dont like rude people."

Well that right there is against Ebay's TOS. They call it feedback extortion.

I respond; "Wow, relax. I was just trying to let you know what the current situation is. No threat was intended. You have good feedback, as do I and I am sure that you value it as much as I do. I have worked real hard and been conscientious to achieve this feedback. I thought I was giving you the benefit of the doubt.

I haven't received the item I paid for and I haven't received any communication back from you. I am sure that if you look at this from my point of view (remember I don't know that you sent me emails, were out of town that you or sent the item) you will be more understanding. Perhaps I should have gone more out of my way to sugar coat my email more but I was in a bit of a rush. The written word does not translate well sometimes. If you would please provide me with dates and tracking numbers I would appreciate it."

He responds in a favorable disposition and I think all is well. A week later (almost 4 weeks from purchase) i receive the item. I left a neutral feedback because I felt the shipping was way too long. He stated that he already sent the item around week two but the postmark revealed his lie.

The guy then leaves me a negative feedback with complete lies that I can't remove and Ebay won't touch without a court order. Since I purchased the item this guy has received a bunch of unfavorable feedback and made his feedback "private".

So I email him; "I left you neutral feedback because your shipping was very late. I had every right to leave you negative feedback but didn't because I thought we were working on the issue. You had no right to leave me negative feedback with false information in it. I did not pay you late. I paid you 2 days after the close of auction. We argue about me being rude, I thought that was settled but it boils down to interpretation. I have contacted ebay about this. I will seek any means I can to resolve this in my favor. You ar ethe type of individual that gives ebay a bad name. Now I know why you have such a bad ebay history and why you have chosen to keep your feedback private and why you have recently changed your screen name."

His response; "There was no issue you got your item and do what you like but ebay wont remove feedbacks. I am sick of people leaving bad feedbacks and then not expecting them in return. I sent your item you got it and that all i can do. Please dont e-mail me again because i wont respond and you should be banned from ebay jerk."

I'm not liking ebay so much now. But since I have his email address I am thinking of other things....

edit: My ebay is ocpickle

Re: My first negative ebay experience and feedback

Yea, my mom's big into Ebay selling. Has like 5 billion positive feedback and one neutral because one lady decided that even though her auction explicitly said a piece was missing from it (some basket cover or something), the set was incomplete.

I summed her whole story up as: It's the Internet.

Re: My first negative ebay experience and feedback

I think the advantage of the auction which e-bay was founded on has been negated by crooks and inflated shipping.

I still check there when preparing to buy something, but unless someone with amazing feedback (I mean thousands) is giving something away with reasonable shipping fees I don't bother.

Re: My first negative ebay experience and feedback

I'd offer to mutually withdraw your feedback. He's already gotten himself in hot water with the community and you have the poster you ordered so the only real change would be the restoration of your good name. He might go for it.

Ebay is a fantastic site. For women. My mother and wife buy all sorts of doodads and knicknacks and never have a hitch: ever heard of a shady majolica dealer?

For the fellas, and whenever dealing with an individual instead of a business, caveat empter.

i like how you think

i have bought nothing over ebay since i got robbed, i bought a head lamp designed for scuba, it had a great looking tri-band strap for comfot and stability,

i paid a fair price for what was worth £60... at least... i got a £4.99 "Army and Navy" caving lamp with a ridiculous rubber strap and when i did take it diving (just because i wanted to see what would happen) it filled up fizzed and died in 10 meters.

ebay is comprised of a bunch of tossers ripping off honest people.

Re: My first negative ebay experience and feedback

Pickle, you did the right thing. You left an appropriate response to the negative feedback left for you. Most people who have eBay'd for some time will see this, and will also notice that the seller turned his feedback private, meaning he has done something shady and has something to hide. This means most eBayers will continue to still buy/sell with you, and most will ignore that negative.

Also, in the future, try not to leave feedback first, esp. when dealing with someone like that. At the very least you would be able to give him a negative back. I agree that this whole feedback thing is still a pain in the a**, but at the same time, it should hardly affect your future eBaying, if you still choose to do so.

Re: My first negative ebay experience and feedback

I have submitted a complaint to eBay but they specifically state that they won't remove negative feedback without a court order. This is frustrating because I have proof that the information he entered is wrong. i.e. Paypal (owned by Ebay) transaction #.

He has since changed his ebay id to slumberparty-california. I don't remember what it was before.

Sucks man, I would hate something like that happen to me, it's taken me over 5 years to get positive 16. One negative would totally ruin my rating. There's not much you can do other than where it lets you explain the comment just say "I received item 5 weeks late, and the seller gave me negative feedback for retaliation of my feedback."

something along those lines.

Re: My first negative ebay experience and feedback

It's a bit of a PITA, but what I do is have one ebay account for selling and one account for buying. That way, I can neg a seller when they deserve it (without worrying about retalliation) and still be able to sell what I need to.

Re: My first negative ebay experience and feedback

I, of course, can't officially condone any kind of retaliatory action against this individual. However, in the interest of warning all of you about his shady business practices (there seems to be a fair amount of eBay'ers here) I guess I can tell you his name and email addy.

I hope this doesn't violate any TOS here
