Ran across this discussion and image on another forum and thought it would be interesting to discuss here.

Interestingly, I grew up in San Diego, California and everyone I know uses "coke" or "soda" to refer to these drinks, but I'd say they're about equal, not weighted so heavily towards "soda" like the map indicates. If you were to walk into Taco Bell and ask for a coke, they would ask you what kind you wanted...

Here most people use "soft drink" as a generic term. We just use "coke" to refer to the specific brand. I've never heard anyone outside of america call one a soda or pop.

I Live in Australia, And Most People Call It Just Soft Drinks, And Coke as the brand, some people like myself say Soda, But I Have Never heard anyone call it Pop.

I said SODA, as the term for carbonated, sugary beverages in all.
I said COKE, as that's my preferred, all-purpose carbonated, sugary beverage.
And I said SOMETHING ELSE, as I have a Mountain Dew: Live Wire addiction as well (it's my go-juice... can barely start the day until the first pull of that life-giving elixir begins coursing through my veins ).

My folks are from western New York and I grew up with them calling everything pop. I guess early on I referred to anything carbonated and sugary as a coke but then changed to specifying the product by it's name.
I think my folks, after 20 some odd years have finally started to defer to the ways of the south and now they refer to all things as a coke.

I used to call it pop which matches up with the map there, but now I call it what it is like Beam & Coke, Scotch & Water, Tequila & Squirt.....whatever.

Yep I'm a soda man myself the only problem is now that I am older I have to add "Diet" in front of it.

The map is very true for the southern part of the U.S.
Another good one to ask is:

I've tried soda and pop, but I like beer best.

When I lived in Michigan, I called it soda (probably because my parents did), everyone else called it pop.

When I moved to Virginia, I had finally got into the habit of calling it pop, everyone else called it soda.

People made fun of me.... now I call it soda again.

I call them by name, or call them soda or call them carbonated drinks. Never lived in one place longer than 3 or so years, so I've never changed what I call it due to my current location. The closest I got was when I lived in georgia and started to pick up a suthern drawl.
I do call a "lawn trimmer" a weed eater and all that stuff, but I've done that all my life.

Oh, and a fun fact about the south: People are so NICE! up north near DC they are all stony, but go south a ways and they are just sooo nice. The south really is awesome.
