Wrong. Canada is the 51st state. Puerto Rico is the 52nd and Australia is the 53rd.

Puerto Rico is a territory not a state. Canada is NOT a state.. we have enough idiots to screw ourselves up in government.. Sorry i just hate when ppl refer to Canada as a State.

edit: this reminds me of a funny thing my friend said - in a bar in Barcelona the conversation somehow drifted to politics... anyway, someone suggested that in the spirit of brotherhood and all that, that there should be a single world flag... My friend (trying to get a rise out of them) responded, "yeah! we can just use the American flag - we'll just throw another star on there for the rest of the world!" .... it was probably a "you had to be there" moment, but everyone pissed themselves laughing...

LOL at the Onion article and "The End".

Before the US FedGov got power-hungry and turned into a State itself, the US was essentially a defense pact between cooperating sovereign entities, hence "States". It's original job was to protect the States from each other and from outsiders, and to protect individuals from their States.
