Re: Massive EVE Online Heist

If you go to ebay and look at the games market, you don't see PC game CD's for sale, you see gold or items from various online games.

This person most likely quit or started an alternate char or is currently emailing frivolously to the CS department. Either way will learn that trust should not be given so lightly. Of course it's all just virtual stuff but it's a lot of time down the tubes too. Personally when i ran a corp with friends we brought one guy in that was an outsider who did management things well but we never gave him full access and we always kept that possibility of deceit close in our minds.

Then again maybe this person really deserved it.

Re: Massive EVE Online Heist

The funny thing is that as these games become more open and allow for this type of interesting behavior, the virtual "corporations" will begin to adopt more real-world controls and procedures to prevent fraud and theft. Real exciting stuff like double accounting, purchasing departments, regulatory agencies, etc. Woo hoo!!!

Re: Massive EVE Online Heist

I'm certain this person had a large personal stock of money and equipment, so if she ever resurfaces she will not be a noob. I do wonder about the real-world consequences of such a blow, however. Was this all in good fun or will people take it personally offline? Unfortunately, unscrupulous backstabbing actually has many rewards in-game. Unless the devs decide to sic CONFED on the perpetrators. Now that WOULD be interesting. After all, the villains in this caper did steal an Imperial Apocalypse, gifted to the target by the Emperor. The Amarrians might take a dim view of that.

But they're not kidding about the "worth billions" thing. EVE has game elements that literally take years to construct - fleets and starbases that require constant maintenance and upgrading, titanic basecraft you build by deconstructing moons, power structures and alliances built up across star systems and corporations from one end of the galaxy to the other.

You've been drinking too much of that Sarbanes Oxley kool-aid.

Re: Massive EVE Online Heist

But it tastes so sweet!

Seriously, though, don't you think that as the stakes of getting ripped off go up the controls will follow? From the sound of things, the "corporation" who pulled off the heist has some very strong security in place and seem to have operated in a professional manner. Almost as if a bunch of bored counter-intelligence types decided to pwn some noobs.

Re: Massive EVE Online Heist

This sounds amazingly awsome, but I don't do monthly subscriptions. You can download this for free? I could have SWORN I heard that there are free servers (shards?) to play this on. That would make the game completely free, and alot more intriguing.....

There is only 1 server on which all ~19k or so players play on. There's also a test server for patch and balance testing, but not many people play on that one. It's the community that drives the game. Shards would only divide it up and make it boring (no/sparse interaction).
